walls changing dimension HELP
« on: November 23, 2009, 06:18:34 am »
Good Day,  I am trying to change the dimension of an exterior wall which works fine except it changes the dimensions of all adjoining walls.  How do I prevent this?  Thanks in advance.

Some walls will have to move when lengthing or shortening a wall but I think what you are saying is that there are also some walls you have laid out that you want to keep as is. If you simply select a wall and click on it's dimension you will change that wall and both that are attached.
If instead you use your cursor to select a group of walls either with shift key and click or a cursor loop, then right click and select 'Move' , the bottom 'Commander bar' will become active (make sure it is turned on by checking 'Commander' in Settings / Program Settings dialog under Work Space.)

Type in the distance you want to move that 'group of walls' in the Commander bar and hit Enter on the key board

1 Make sure Commander is turned ON.
2 Select Group of Walls to adjust
3 Right Click and select MOVE.
4 Click on the corner of the wall that you want to move a specific distance (you must hold the left mouse down while doing step 5)
5 Type in distance to move in Commander Bar
6 Hit 'Enter' on keyboard.

Thank you Jack this has helped with initial layout however I still cannot change one wall (by entering dimension) without changing any wall it is attached to.  I am trying to change the dimensions of an exterior vestibule by entering exact dimensions (which I can not get by drawing a wall) and every time I highlight and change a dimension both north/south walls either extend or retract.  If I could figure out how to attach an image I would post it for a better explanation.

Hi,

I noticed that Jack is no longer online so thought I would offer a comment.

I assume you are trying to change the wall that shows green in the image. I don't know if you realise, but you can just select the green or red end 'button' of the wall and stretch or shrink it.  Shrinking it will detatch it from the other wall of course.  Using a similar method to what Jack mentioned (with the Commander bar), you can right click, select Lengthen, click on the end of the wall you want to lengthen, then type in the dimension you want to lengthen it by in the Commander bar.

Actually I can't quite follow what you are trying to do.  If you change the length of the wall, would you not also want to move the wall attached to it or it will not be attached and won't be a room or would stick out beyond the end wall if you lengthened it?

If you just want to move the end wall in by a specific amount, then just click on the end wall and use the keyboard arrow keys to move it right/ left/ up/ down by whatever you have the Nudge setting set to.  Set it to 1/16th inch for example and it will move in that increment for each keyboard press.  You can just watch the onscreen dimension until it reaches what you want.  (Nudge distance is set in Settings/ Programme Settings/ Drawing Aids). This may help since you said you can't get it exact when drawing the wall in the first place. Personally I don't worry about getting them right when I draw them at first. It is easier to do it very rough, then just drag them to the approximate dimension and then use the arrows to get them exact. It is much quicker.

Welcome to the forum by the way.

Hi 00100

Just guessing at which walls you want to move and which to stay the same/ does this help?

Or simply disconnect the walls you want to retain, move the one wall and then reconnect.

If you cannot get exact length, it is easy to use the dimension tool with snaps turned ON.  You will see Blue Nodes at the ends of the leaders attached to the dimension line. If you place your dimension at the length needed (using Commander), you can then 'Move' the dimension so the snaps fall directly inline with the wall you want to move. Then select the wall, right click select 'Move' and hold your cursor over the portion of the wall corner you want that length.

For instance , if you have brick but want the stud line corner to be a specific length , hold cursor by zooming in on the stud corner, then move it until it 'snaps' to that node on the dimension.
