Problem Installing windows in second story Cape cod
« on: February 08, 2010, 04:39:49 pm »
The problem I am having is installing windows in the second floor on a Cape cod type design. The second floor is really a space under the roof, I have set wall and ceiling height to 1" under Building location/ second story wall and ceiling height. Then I draw the second story walls and have auto extend enabled. The roof is then placed on the first floor walls. Everything looks good until you try to install windows in the end walls. I have to manually set the wall height to over 24" to be able to put windows in the end walls. It doesn't seem like the auto extend is working on the end walls. Doors will go in fine on the interior walls. Hope someone can tell me what I am doing wrong. I sent a message to Allan Chesney and he replied. I hope he gets this as I am including a simple model of what I am trying to do. Thanks Allan for your help.

Hi Patrick,

You have inserted the roof on the Ground floor not the Second floor so it is below your walls.

Delete the roof, insert the walls on the second floor so they follow the walls of the ground floor and insert the roof again on the second floor.  Make sure the roof "Solution Type" is set to "Ignore Next Storey" (or it may have a hole in roof).

Now you will be able to insert windows in the gable ends as in the image below.

Hope that solves it for you.

Thanks a million Allan. Now that you have found out what I was doing wrong it sounds so elementary. Thanks again and have a great day.

Hi Patrick,

Not a problem - pleased to help.
It catches a lot out this one - I may have to do a more detailed tutorial on it when I get the time.
