Problem fitting the roof
« on: June 22, 2010, 12:12:51 pm »
I have a problem getting the roof to display as it should, I have tried making the 2nd floor wall only 2", but the roof remains floting in the air, can anyone help with getting my roof to fit as in the attached picture.

Thanks in advance
Colin

Hi Colin,

Welcome to the Forum!!

First - I love the front of the house - the front gable is different - I like it!

We really need to see an image of what you are getting in TFP to analyse what the problem is but I will have a guess:
You said you have made the walls 2" high but does that mean that you changed them to be 2" high from what they were or did you change them in the Building Locations (Settings menu).

Building Locations controls all the vertical settings.  Your Second Floor Wall Height setting, should be set to 2" as it determines where the roof sits. If you still have the walls as 8' (default), then the roof will be 8' above the Floor Level of the Second Floor.  The walls on your plan when you draw them should be left to "Extend to Roof" (not changed to "Level" and set to 2" - if this is what you have done).

If that is what you have done follow the steps below to fix it:

1 )  Delete the roof

2 )  Go to Settings / Building Locations and change the Second Floor, Wall Height to 2".

3 )  In Plan view on Second Floor,  Select a wall, right click and choose Select All Similar and change them to "Extend to Roof". (The walls will be all 2" high but when you insert the roof again they should automatically extend to the roof (2") at the edges and also to the roof in the centre (10' or whatever), meaning that you can still insert doors etc.)

4 )  Insert the roof again (it will now sit at 2" as per the Building Location setting).

If that does not fix the problem, then you may have to provide an image or post a copy of the BLD file.

Hi,

Thanks, the front was one of the reasons we were taken with it, I have tried what you suggested with no luck, what I had done earlier was to set the height on the walls, but this also did not help, the roof just does not want to drop to where it should be.

I have attached the bld file, if you can get the roof to where it should be and tell me how, I would really appreciate it.

Please forgive the stair case, trying to get it to fit into the location, but think the second floor may be the problem.

Thanks
Colin

Hi Colin,

Not much wrong actually.

First you do not need a 2" wall - that would only be needed if there were rooms in the roof space - as in an attic.
So your Location setting at 8' is correct. All the walls should first be set to Level and 8', then changed to Extend to Roof. This will fix the walls so they extend to the front roof gable.

You then have another issue to get the front roof to represent the photo of your house, as it is a narrower gable then you currently have and one side is much lower than the other.  I have created the image below to show you how to do this as it is too hard to do it all in words!  If you follow the steps in the order they are in the image, it should work out correctly, as in the second image.  The pitch of the roof appears from the photo to be steeper than you have on your model. I have increased it to 12 in one but you will have to set this to the correct pitch.

It is often easier to do the stairs outside so the surrounding walls do not interfere and move them inside later.

Hope this all works for you and you can follow it. I have include the adjusted BLD so you can see what I have done.

If you have further problems just ask.
