TFP15 Crashes after install - Visual C++ problem??
« on: August 24, 2010, 02:55:37 pm »
Hi All,

I have just downloaded a trial copy of TFP15 and installed, but it crashes immediately on start-up. The application event log gives no real indication but says:

Code: [Select]
Faulting application TFP15PRO.exe, version 15.0.0.770, time stamp 0x4be45082, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x00000000, exception code 0xc0000096, fault offset 0x00377c35, process id 0xc50, application start time 0x01cb43db135a2c73.

I'm running Vista SP2, and have tried different Visual C++ re-distributable packages, including 20005 (SP1), 2008 (SP1) and 2010. If I install all packages I get a slightly different error which says:

Code: [Select]
Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files\IMSIDesign\TURBOFloorPlan3D Home & Landscape PRO 15\Bin\TFP15PRO.exe". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.MFC,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50727.4053" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.

Re-installing the packages hasn't helped.

The IMSI "clean install" option is pretty lame and all of the relevant TFP15 folder are clear/deleted. However, I am running an older version of TFP - ver 12 - which has no issue running. I am assuming that both version will run side-by-side with no issues - I don't really want to un-install the older version.

Any ideas?

Hi swinster,

First there should be no problem having multiple versions of TFP on the computer.  I have 5 at present so it does work but you can only run one at once of course.

Unfortunately Pat is away at present - he usually takes on all these type of questions and I am not a technical person, so I don't have all the answers but will share what I can.

From monitoring the forum over many years these issues usually seem to be resolved by installing in Compatibility Mode. This was my personal experience also with Vista, so this post should help: http://forums.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,931.0.html.

Other issues then come down to having the latest drivers, particularly the video driver or setting the hardware acceleration on the video driver. Hopefully we do not have to get into all that though.  Try just uninstalling and do a clean install but use the Compatibility Mode and let us know how you get on.

Hi Allan,

Tried this - no joy.

Installation completes successfully - as it did without compatibility mode - but TFP15 fails to starts. The error I see in the second of the two listed above, referring to side-by-side configuration.

In this instance, I have re-installed the Visual 2005 (SP1) re-distributable and update before installing TFP15.

Sorry but it is beyond me I am afraid.

Pat would probably have been able to help with this but he is away till the end of the month I think.

IMSI does offer free installation support ( http://www.imsidesign.com/Support/TurboFLOORPLANSupport/tabid/515/Default.aspx ) but it is a US phone number - don't know what such calls would cost from the UK.

I will bring your situation to the attention of the TFP product manager - he may have a solution.

Cheers Alan. I will wait for Pat to return, but if you have some inside contacts that can input in the meantime, that would be great.

I have asked the developers if they can give me any info on what could be causing this.
I'll let you know as soon asI hear anything.
Thanks,
Dave

I heard back from them this is what they suggest.

If it Is related to redistributables than it would be the VS2005 one that could potentially cause some problems.  There are 2 different versions available and it depends on which 3rd party library would cause a conflict.

Try:
vcredist_x86.exe from here --> http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=766a6af7-ec73-40ff-b072-9112bab119c2&displaylang=en
Thanks,
Dave

Unfortunately, I have already tried this version with no fix - this is the currently installed version

As with the first post, I get the same (first) error - TFP15 crashes immediately on opening.

If I remove the VC++ runtime, I get the second error from the first post. It does appear as though the VC++ library is installed as it seems as though I get a different error if they have been uninstalled.

No other apps appear to be failing, so I'm guessing the issue is actually with TFP15, not the runtime libraries??

As per the last post, still not fixed.

I can install TFP 15 with no issue, yet when I run it, it crashes immediately and leaves the first error post above in the application log.

I messed around with uninstalled the VC++ libraries and ended up getting a different error, the second one posted above, which complained about side-by-side configuration. Installing the correct library again remove this error, but then goes back to the first.

I have tried the IMSI "clean install method" which isn't really that helpful, but unsurprisingly this made no difference.

Not sure if there is any logging that can be done by the actually application as the error log doesn't really give any useful info.

More info from the developers:

There is a chance that the TFP products used a version of the Installer project that did not account for some unrelated redistributables.

I would suggest that the user also try these 2 packages(these are the 2008 versions):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=a5c84275-3b97-4ab7-a40d-3802b2af5fc2&displaylang=en
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9b2da534-3e03-4391-8a4d-074b9f2bc1bf&displaylang=en

It must be noted that there are 2 different versions of each set of Redistribs...2 for each of VS2005 & VS2008.  Microsoft issued some security fixes which wreaked havoc on the dependant apps. If I remember correctly, we had some installs that included dll's that had been linked against different development environment versions(what we use and what some 3rd party developers use could be and are different) resulting in InstallShield needing to pick up on that fact and include the appropriate redistributables...there was an issue that caused this to unknowingly fail and has since been fixed.

There is no harm in having all 4 packages installed...they install Side-By-Side because they have different signatures.

P.S. Here are the 2 VS2005 packages:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=200b2fd9-ae1a-4a14-984d-389c36f85647&displaylang=en
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=766a6af7-ec73-40ff-b072-9112bab119c2&displaylang=en

vv

Nope, still same problem.

Just to be sure, I installed all the package listed above (even if installed previously). TFP15 crashed.

Uninstalled TFP15, rebooted, logged in as admin, deleted all temp files, re-installed, but TFP still crashed with the same error.

does vista come with an XP compatibility mode like windows 7? might be worth setting up a virtual machine on your vista install but have it running XP. Try installing it on there and see if it crashes. Just a thought...

The compatibility mode in Vista is just like the Win98 compatibility mode in XP - it's only a software fudge, not a true virtual environment. I don't really want to get a VM running as the machine.
