Selecting All Elements of Same Type for Editing
« on: November 16, 2007, 11:52:19 am »
You may remember that in FP11 you could select elements by type. For example you could choose Edit/Select_by_Type then choose from exterior walls, interior walls, roofs, floors, etc., then make whatever change in size or appearance you needed.  I can't find a menu item that would indicate that this is possible in TFP - finding Select/Edit or Select_All as the only choices where the latter selects all elements regardless of type.  I HAVE been able to select all exterior walls - on occasion and NOT on purpose (don't know how to repeat the process) - but when I do, I can't access Properties to make any changes.  Right clicking only gives 2 choices which I failed to note (and now I can't replicate the selection).

I'd like to be able to select all the exterior walls in a design to change the height from 8' to 9' (and possibly to change appearance), but so far I've only been able to highlight individual wall segments and change them individually.  Changing exterior wall height means that you must also change the roof level which, again, I've only been able to do by selecting each roof segment and changing the level of each.  This is a very laborious, multi-screen,multi-response process.

Have I missed the part where this was covered or is the function not available in TFP?

If the latter, please consider this a feature request.  I will cross post the request if need be.

TIA

While I have not found the equivalent FP click on floor to get the "room" and be able to select floors or walls or ceiling to change things collectively...

You can shift-click to select each wall and they "add" to the selection (works for any items)....but like FP, sometimes you can then right-click to change properties, but sometimes that choice is not there.

I understand you can't select a wall and window and expect a properties change....but selecting only walls that seem similar such as all exterior walls...it should work.

An alternative that works fast is to use the materials paintbrush (alt-e-m)(menu/edit/materials paintbrush) and once the material is chosen you can walk/fly/etc. around to click on object to apply the material....and if you change views or tools, the paintbrush returns with same material for application.  But for a wall, you can only change one side at a time. Check help file for materials paintbrush for more insight.

Hope that helps....but suggest you do cross post because the FP "room" selection (red perimeter) was very handy and it is missed.

The problem getting the Properties dialog to display for several walls at once seems to be to actually select the walls only and not something else.  I found that every time I did not get the Properties box that I has actually selected something that was not a wall.

I agree that the Select by Type, select the room in plan view and the list of objects for each Location was ideal for selecting objects in previous versions.

Also I found out is that the two objects must be the "same"...all the time.

I installed two lights side by side (sconces)...and was playing with variations...so the settings became different for each one....

Now if I select both..."properties" is not on the right-click list.....but if I select each individually the properties is available for changes

SO if you want things the same....keep them the same...always,   or you will end up changing things individually.

Doug,

You can change things in bulk by setting one in the Catalog to what you want it to be, select all the ones that are supposed to be the same and use the right click Replace to change them all to the new one.  You can use this to change a group of odd chairs to all the one type (or change them all to desks or tables or beds - not that I can think why you would want to do that!!!)

That could be handy for larger plans...

My application would be global replacement of umpteen low-poly place-holder models with more detailed-- And vice-versa...

Let's hear it for "Select by Type"!  In my limited use of FP, it was very useful, and as we can see by the work-arounds here, a much needed update to TFP!
