Graphic Object Catlogs
« on: October 07, 2007, 01:57:25 pm »
Are there any catalogs of graphic objects that don't load with TFP that one should acquire and install?  (I hope IMSI doesn't charge extra for them  >:()

There seemed to be many more graphic objects in FP3D than there are in TFP.  Where did the vehicles go?  They are essential to designing garage spaces.  Where did all the bathtub variations go?  Others?

I've attached a screenshot of the catalog manager.  Is this the entire catalog?  Are there NO vehicles?

See the entry right at the top of this forum (Additional Catalogs).

You can also use  3DS files too of course (if you had previous versions of FP you would probably have a lot).  I just tried a 3DS Porshe out of interest.  I wouldn't recommend the colour or the panel beater!!!

Hi, how well does TFP handle import of 3DS objects with 'high polygon count' ??

Hey, I'm NOT talking photo-real mega-mesh Poser(TM) super-models, because they would need UV-unwrapped skins, bump-maps etc etc. I'm thinking mid-range...

My FPs got slower and slower with successive versions despite much more system RAM and far-faster processors. And, d'uh, IMHO, nothing later could match v6's work-space or graceful slow-down as file-sizes rose...

I'm hoping TFP's 'total re-code' will reset the plan capacity.

Hi Nik,

The car model was 6500 polygons.  Have played with 3DS trees too without any problems - better than V11 in that regard.  I just posted a proper render of this vehicle in the Tips section.

Hello Allan!

Thanks for the response.

Guess I'm dumber than a whole box of nails 'cause I can't find any .dbs files in FP3D.  I have V11.  And the information Mr. Taylor posted kinda explains how catalogs are organized but doesn't tell me where to find the missing pieces to fill the gaps.

Thanks again for the help.

Hi, ahr8tch, getting custom props and whatsits *out* of FP can be a real pain. As yet, only FP can read its own 'drag&drop' BMO format...

I'm not doing much CAD at the moment, but I was heavily into FP, TC and the non-IMSI Poser(TM). That can handle very detailed models of objects and people, but lacks 'construction' tools. It seemed a match made in heaven: Plan and 'massing models' in FP, tweak props in TC, Poser for close-ups...

Poser has a private PP2 mesh format, prefers OBJ-format imports. Given the thriving Poser community, there's a zillion PP2 and OBJ freebies on eg Renderosity. When I found anything that suited my project, I'd convert it to multiple formats with eg Zoltan's 3DOC utility...

Couple of years ago, both my library drive and its 'mirror-twin' on adjacent PC died around the same time. The drives were the same brand, the same batch, there was a manufacturing problem. D'uh. Anyway, my carefully organized libraries of 3DS, OBJ and PoserPP2 mesh objects were *trashed*.

I managed to salvage assorted objects from each, found more in the two PCs' up-load/down-load directories, even found some on the portable drive I attach to my wife's lap-top. I'd originally found most of them on the wwweb, but many links had changed, sites re-worked etc and their free models were long gone...

So, a lot of stuff only existed 'on plan'.

I went through a frenzy of creating FP mini-plans, putting one object on each, saving as DXF. Then I opened them in TC or other modeller, stripped 'space dust' and other rubbish, saved as 3DS...

Like I said, IIRC, only FP can read its own 'drag&drop' BMO object format. Would be nice if IMSI provided a TFP import filter-- I'll put that in 'wish list' !!

Meanwhile, here's the eponymous Block.3Ds...

Hi Nik !

Maybe someday I'll be adept enough to manipulate the object files (he said, wishfully).  Guess I'll add my second on the wish list, too.

Thanks for the information.

A big plus is the ability to import sketcup models.  Even the free sketchup can provide the ability to create all kinds of 'bits' from a single block to a custom roof.  Only limit is imagination.

and Google has a library of free Sketchup 3D models in a variety of categories

You can download individual models and there are some libraries

Check the Google Sketchup home page
