very poor renders - what is wrong here??
« on: October 12, 2007, 09:54:56 am »
I'm doing some testing/trials and have a serious issue with tray ceiling render...otherwise its a very simple one light room

All work done with HA "off"

See attached images
RT = raytrace
RS = radiosity (# = quality level)

I figured if I increased the quality level the render would improve but NOT!

Any ideas?

My experience tells me the triangulated vertex object tray ceiling needs edges creased and/or surfaces made co-planar

Looks like a bug to me unless we can fix this somehow? (its all done with standard TFP12 library)

test cabinets.bld file also attached for anyone else to try...see next "reply"  (limit of 4 files per msg)

my .bld file attched here

maybe you want to try render to see if you get similar results?  especially if you have HA "on"

Camera in Wall , 3 Ceilings

Your camera seems to be partially in the wall and is causing lighting problems.

You have 3 tray ceilings on top of one another and that is causing that triangulated vertex stuff that you talk about. Really isn't a vertex problem but 3 surfaces on top of one another.

Move your camera, delete at least two of the ceilings (maybe there are 4).

I adjusted the lamp parts but that was not the problem.

Radiosity is without brightness decreased.

All other settings the same as yours except for camera placement and deleted ceilings.

Thanks for the detective work....

I had difficulty getting the tray ceiling to show up and had deleted 4 other previous trials but must have missed some.

Glad to see an expert can help.

Even with the issues found so far, I ordered the CD from CADCourse and it shipped yesterday....looking forward to some future fun.

EDIT:   I removed the 2 extra tray ceilings which were overlapped on one another and problem solved!  Makes sense now, the overlaps were causing vertex face confusion for renders.  I left camera in place and as long as the "lens" is "in the room" it works OK....but something to watch for getting noise from the wall in front of camera = not a good camera position.

Guess that is something else to watch for when making duplicate copies too as they remain in same place until moved....one too many in same place and not moved and could have render problems.

Same thing used to happen easily in previous version if a room overlapped a room created two locations in at the same level - one would bleed through the other in triangles.  Same if you accidentally copied a floor to another in the same space you would get triangular patters on the walls if one of the two surfaces was changed. Now we add the ceiling 'manually' we will have to watch for that one lest we add it twice.
