Very slow forum ??
« on: September 25, 2007, 11:55:32 am »
Hi, does your access to this forum run very, very slowly ??

I've typed this far before the smilies finished loading...

Hopefully, more bandwidth will be added as members arrive...

Nik - I tend to agree - lots of graphic elements and html probably doesn't help, especially on dialup. The simple text tree of the old forum was much easier to use and was so easy to see when you had read things or hadn't.  It was also easy to see at a glance who had not had a reply.  It worked wonderfully on my mobile phone too but this one is a bit cumbersome and lots of scrolling. I can see the possibility of requests getting lost, as happens to me all the time on other fourms of this style.  I am sorry we have lost the old format!

ALSO:  Is there any way on this forum -among all the icons etc, to quickly see that you have read onece you are in particular Category?  I assume there is but so far it has escaped me.

Allen,

It has been my experience with forums of this type that if you are logged in you will see a 'NEW' indicator next to the messages that you have not previously read.  If this forum is this type it should be fairly easy to see just what you have read and not read. Just click on the 'New' button and it will take you to the unread message.

Hope this is of help,
MCP

I'm on Broadband, so the slowness would seem to lie 'upstream' of my local link...

I hope IMSI will upgrade server bandwidth as our numbers rise.

I miss the FP text-based forum already. Quaint, yes, but FAST.

Analogy might be EzBoard, which is migrating reluctant users from 'Basic Text' to fancy 'Yuku' amidst screams of protest.

I'd like a PlainText / Extended switch added to this forum's options. Although those buttons and tabs have their uses, they slow operation and waste screen space.

Um, why don't the icons cache ??

I'm also on broadband/cable and this forum runs at normal speeds for me...not slow

It is typical for many forums that use this format.

I guess I like the older forum format better because it seemed simple and page full of info not icons, but this format is very common and works very well...and better than some others from a big company ..... such as Adobe.com.

So I'm not complaining, especially if any reported bugs get fixed and apparently there are not that many so far...after some level of learning curve.  I downloaded the trial and trying to find time to give it an honest try.

Getting used to it.

I think I have come to terms with the new style.  At least it does bring the most recent post and a topic back to the top which some of the other forums I have used don't, so that is good!  I suppose the only issue now really is the waste of space in the topic headings area. With headers turned off and on full screen you only see about 18 topic whereas on the old one you could see 40.  Oh well - is suppose it looks prettier and still does the same thing!
