Title: multiple floor coverings
Post by: caroline louise on November 26, 2009, 03:20:32 AM
Hi there,
I'm new to TFP (actually, I'm new to any rendering software!) and am really just playing about , getting a feel for it.
However, I can't seem to get rid of the default floorcoverings. when I add a floorcovering to a room (using Add By Room), and view in 3D the floor will be patchy - my own choice in some places, the default in others.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Caroline

Hi Caroline,

Welcome to the forum.

Sounds like you have many floors all in the same place!!  Go to 3D view select the fooor and delete. Keep deleteing untill they are all gone, then add a floor. Now select the floor, right click, select Properties / Appearance and change the appearance to the texture you want.

In Settings/Programme Settings/Building Aids you will probably find that "Automatically Insert Floors" is turned on. This means as soon as you connect 4 walls, you will have a wooden floor.  If you want to put in your own floors then uncheck this box.

When you "insert floors" you are adding another floor over the top of the existing one, so the timber and tiles or carpet textures, are competing in the same space.  To have different textures in different rooms, just change the texture on the floor surface (and edges if necessary), unless you are interested in the actual construction of the floor itself (timber, concrete etc). For the latter you will need to delete any existing floor and replace it with the construction type you want, then change the texture if necessary.

We have requested a warning message that "a floor already exists - do you want to replace it?" be added to a future version, which will prevent this problem. You will find the same thing happens with ceilings.

I would suggest that you go to Settings/Programm settings and read though each tab, so you know what happens by default - then you will know where to go if something does not work how you would like it to.  Most of the default settings are fine but it is good to know there are some you can change if you want to work differently to 'normal'.  Also study the Settings/ Building Locations as these control all the vertical dimensions.

The User Guide is very useful, also the Help /Tutor to know how the tools work and the forum Seach will help you find just about everything. Can't find it then just ask here!

It is good fun once you get used to how it works.  All the best with the learning curve!!

Thanks for your help Allan. Slowly but surely, I'm beginning to get the hang of TFP. A lot has come of just playing around with it & exploring!

Hi Caroline,

As you said it is the best way to learn - try out everything, play with all the tools to see what they do. Double-click things in the dialog boxes, its amazing what opens up.

Have fun.
