Hi, See current house with projected addition (210_ss1.jpg) and tell me if I can cut an opening in the roof as well as in the walls (and also remove the existing siding walls) in order to accomodate the new addition part with its projected roof (result.jpg)?
Also included (210.ss1_framed) to show how the framing is, and my .bld file.
Thanks.
Hi,
Cutting the roof should not be a problem - see the following steps:
1. If it not already set, then go to Settings/ Program Settings /Workspace and make the Dimming Percentage 80 or similar so you can see the other locations dimly.
2. Make sure that Angle Snap and Ortho are turned off on the Status bar.
3. Change to Chambre location.
4. Select the roof, then right click and select Cut Opening.
5. Cut an opening out of the Addition side of the roof starting outside the roof area (in the Addition area), follow the dim line of the Addition roof exactly where it cuts into the the Chambre roof and finishing outside the roof area again (click onnce outside the roof anrea then select the Right Click Finish which will join the last section ofthe opening and will delete that bit of the roof.. Leave a bit on each side if you want the Chambre roof to still extend down the wall on the outside. (See the image)
6. Make sure the Inside edges of the cut are set to Gable (green arrows - see image) and the same edges have the overhang set to minimum to effectively remove them.
7. If necessary drag the blue points to make edges line up exactly with the other dim edge of the Addition roof and the walls.
It wall automatically 'repair' the framing but you will have to align the two roofs carefully to make it exact.
The connecting walls in each of the rooms (Chambre and Addition) will need to be replaced by a "Room Divide" line. This will make the two 'rooms' still complete but mean there will be no wall there. Draw the Room Divide parallel to the wall between the two rooms, then delete the wall and drag the room divide line out to the end of the side walls. Each room has a wall across this 'join' so you will have to do this for both walls.
Hope that all makes sense and you can follow it.
Allan
Hi Allan,
You're not a "hero member" for nothing! I did the roof part steps as you indicated and everything worked perfectly. But I can't get the room division part very well... sometimes it gives me "divisions" but not exactly where I want, etc. I tried to follow the online help and examples (by clicking 2 points), but no luck. Is it better to select 4 points (rectangle)?
Is is better to do it in a 2D or 3D view? I understand that I have 2 connecting walls so I'll have to do it for both locations.
Thanks.
Hi again,
For the room divider (invisible wall) just click into the wall at one side of the room, drag the dotted line across the room and click into the other wall. Right click Finish. Turn Ortho on to easily keep it straight. That keeps your room complete (4 walls although one is invisible) and allows you do delete the other wall without the roof falling in!!
Next delete the wall you do not need and then just drag the divider wall to the end of the side walls.
Do the same on the ohter location and align the two divider walls.
Allan
Still mixed results. When I remove the last wall (from the mainfloor addition location) the floor goes away.
Included my plan again: (210Fort_with_roof_cutaway) and the bizzare result I'm getting (210Fort_with_roof_cutaway_2).
Perhaps something is wrong with my original plan. Will continue to try though.
Thanks
Got it! I didn't follow your instructions properly.
It works great. Now, where do I send my check ? ;)
Merci beaucoup!
Hi - glad you got it sorted out.
Presumably the Room Divider was not connecting at least to the middle of the two side walls.
As long as it connects and still makes a "4 wall room", then floor, ceiling, roof etc should remain intact and allow you to delete the unnecessary wall without causing any other issues. If you do not complete the four walls first, before deleting the one you don't want, then the model can partially collapse (as a real house would!!!)
It also needs the 4 walls (even if one is invisible) to make the Exterior Appearance show - otherwise it would treat the three remaiing walls as Interior walls and they would take on the Interior wall properties.
Send the check to Haiti - they probably need it more than me!!
