For the sake of simplicity, let's say we just take a 10x10 gypsum pier. How do you make it have an "X" through it when viewed in 2d?
I would think you would go to Properties/Appearance/2D footprint/Pattern and change it. But that doesn't seem to do anything, and "Enable Solid Fill" only makes it solid black.
Thanks for any input.
Hi George,
I think this may be a hangover from the parent program, Envisioneer, as I have not found a way either to enable the 2D pattern to show - mind you I have not looked much for it either, as I never print plans anyway. TFP is essentially for 3D visualisation and rendering - Envisioneer also produces construction drawings, which use the patterns.
You can of course change the Solid Fill colour, if black is too stark for your purposes.
Allan
Thanks Allan.
Too bad- that is a useful feature in other CAD programs- even just for looking at the 2d plans on screen if nothing else. It helps distinguish different solid & hollow items clearly.
Another work around is to change the color(s) of lines as they show in 2D;
for example you might make all furniture with blue lines or hollow posts with red lines etc.
or some other combination of color or line attributes....have not done so in a long time but I think you can change line width/weight and/or line style (dashed)....but I'd have to look at the dialog box again.
You can also "adjust" what and how much you see from imported 3D geometry such as .3ds by changing the vertex mesh....that may be too much work unless its very important to you.
Also you can place another object, slightly smaller, inside the shape and both 2D shape lines will show.....select the "inside" shape for its 2D view and adjust its line color as needed....so for an "x", insert an X shape object....never see it in 3D but it will show in 2D...you can even bury the "extra" object or raise it into an attic, for example, if hiding it inside your 3D object does not work.

Doug,
That's a great idea:
Quoteyou can place another object, slightly smaller, inside the shape and both 2D shape lines will show.....select the "inside" shape for its 2D view and adjust its line color as needed....so for an "x", insert an X shape object
For normal stuff it's a little too many extra steps, but that's what I'll do when I really want a pattern shown.
Thanks
Hi George,
If you only do this occasionally then another alternative is to use the Layout toobar. This would allow you to draw an X from corner to corner of any shape in your plan or draw any other lines, circles etc. They are just 2D CAD tools and do not show up in 3D. In fact you can use them to draw your whole plan if you want. You can even then select the lines , right click and convert them to Walls, Members etc. Very useful to add guttering (eg http://forums.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,867.0.html (http://forums.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,867.0.html) ) or specialised 3D shaped cornice to a room or cupboard for example.
Allan
Worked perfectly. Thanks guys.
Now all we need is a "Create Group" or "Create Block" tool to join the X together so it I can resize it to fill any size rectagular 2d object.
Hi George,
If you import the attached BIM file, (File/ Catalogues / Import BIM) you will find a number of different shapes that I have made, along with two or three that come with TFP for import, that you may find useful - things like spheres, cylinders, triangles, boxes, T rail, L rail etc and you will also find two X objects. X is an X in 3D - which will show in 3D and the X-2D is just a 2D X that will only show on the plans. By default it should install into Interior Accessories.
If you insert a column for example that is 500 x 500 mm and set your X-2D to the same size, it will snap into the column on the plan. Obviously you can size it to fit into any shape. You will have to have collision turned off for it to sit inside the column. You may choose to insert these onto a separate locations for 2D objects, so you can easily turn them off if you want.
The first image shows what is in the BIM. You will notice the 3D X in the foreground. The 2D X is alongside of it but does not show of course.
The nature of all imported 3DS objects (which these all were) is that they import at random heights and can repositon quite a long way vertically and or horizontally, if you resize them after they are inserted into the model. Dont just assume it was deleted and insert another - the original is still there but out of view, even below the terrain or high about the whole model. I put in a request for this to be fixed in V15 so we will just have to wait and see what happens there. In the meantime just be alert to the fact that they may relocate if you adjust the size after insertion.
I hope you find the X-2D and other shapes useful at some time.
Allan
Allan,
That's even better- I am using your 2d X already.
And thanks for these other objects. I'm sure they'll come in handy in the future. It is very generous of you to share these, as you obviously spent time creating them.
