Title: duplicate wall doesn't copy windows, doors or openings???
Post by: artiechang on April 01, 2010, 07:38:15 AM
I am doing a first floor addition and have my existing house on one location and my addition on another location.  I want a third location with both existing and new addition walls together so I can dimension everything automatically, but when I select all walls and "duplicate to location", the walls duplicate but all the windows, doors and openings do NOT!!  I have them visible in the current location and the new location.  They are simply not copied.  Help! ???

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

You should be able to duplicate anything from one location to another but it will only duplicate what you select.  If you only selected the walls then only the walls will duplicate, if you select the windows and doors also, at the same time, then they will all duplicate. Click and drag the mouse over all the walls, hence doors and windows, then select Duplicate to Locations. If you select that way of course and have furniture on that floor then it will duplicate too.  To take just doors and windows then select them imndividually but hold down the shift key while selecting.

Hopefully that will solve the problem for you.

I made all parts of the wall visible (except framing) and selected everything via the "select all" menu.  But still no dorrs, windows or openings, just a solid wall.  I verified it was solid by looking at 3D view and it turned into a solid wall.  I think this is a bug in the program. ???

Hi again,

I have just tried it again, via the Select All as you did and it worked perfectly.  I have been using the program and its predecessor every day for about 10 - 12 years and this feature has always worked since it was introduced about 4 years ago.

Try creating a new model, add just 4 walls, a window and door, select all and then duplicate the ground floor to the second and see if that works. If if does then you have something set in the model that is interfering with it, or there is some corrupt element, usually a wall problem, that is causing it to fail.  File/Repair Project may fix it or you may have to search for the corrupt element.

One other thing - what is the full version number that you are using?

I'm using 14.0.C1.637.
I've tried repair several times and I've repeated this problem several times.  It is repeatable.

I just tried it on a new project and it worked.  But I've tried repair several times on my original project.  Does it matter that I have 13 locations (layers)?  It is a fairly complex remodel/addition.  I've even set the framing per location in the location window.  This is very frustrating!

"repair" does not know how to fix everything.

I'd guess you have an object design "fault".....most typical problem is a mismatch of walls at a corner....not snapped together correctly....and the error is usually small and not seen unless you zoom close to see every corner (in 2D)...

alternately you can try hiding or temporarily deleting to help find the problem area

Often it can be easier to go back to a previously saved version (you did save intermediate files right?) and re-do....that can be faster than searching.
13 locations should not be an issue.  Complexity is ripe for errors by user or sometimes the s/w

If its a bug, its probably easier to simply insert new windows and doors if copy does not work....use the old location to verify the object and its position.....not much design thinking to do; should go faster than trying to resolve an issue with little obvious help.

Hope it renders OK...that can fail for the same reason...broken wall joints.

As Doug said it is usually a wall join issue that prevents rendering and it looks like it may affect duplication too.  The fact that the walls duplicate but not windows and doors would seem to indicate a problem with them rather than the walls but I have not experienced or heard of a corruption with these, but walls can be complex and can become corrupt as the image illustrates.

If a new model works then it is obviously something corrupt, probably a wall, so the only way is to check all the joins.  A selected section of wall will have a green dot where you started it, red one where you finished and blue in the middle. If you have a red or green dot in a straight section of wall, it is broken. This may be intentional, by you inserting a Break, but if not, then delete one side and stretch the over to the next wall to remove the break.

In the image you will see how I have created an odd angle of wall and deleted one side, but it has left a complex group of wall fragments. (You can only see these by actually selecting the wall, holding shift and select the adjoining wall etc - the intersection lines will then show). Usually it will repair itself if you delete a wall but if you leave a fragment of wall sticking out one side as I did (because when you originally joined it you went slightly too far and actually crossed the wall), the tiny bit sticking out the other side will not be deleted and may leave a joint similar to the one illustrated.

As Doug said you need to zoom in on each join to see if it is clean and that there are no unintentional breaks or nibs sticking out. Have the walls selected when you do so you see any fragments of wall that should not be there. A wall intersection should just have a triangle in the middle of the join.  Even if you re-did the windows and doors separately, you may find later that it will not render because of this corruption, so it is better to find it now.

Hopefully the image will help you to see what MAY be causing the problem.

The other thing is that you do not have the latest update installed. The latest ends in 662 so to bring your copy up to date you would need to download and install the 637-662 patch (link at bottom of forum). However, the patch did not address any issues with duplication, as far as I know, as it worked perfectly before, so I don't think this will help with your present issue.  If you do apply the update, make sure you take a copy of your catalogue (if you have made modifications to it) and your BLD files of course, just in case!
