I noted where i put it when i imported it, but it never appears in the catalog on the right hand side.

Initially they only go into your model not the catalogue. You can add them to the catalogue at File/ Catalogues /Add Element to Catalogue. The object will go into the catalogue when you select it and go into the section you chose when originally importing it.
The best way to import is to do it in the right panel catalogue. Right click in the section where you want it to be (eg Interior Accessories) and choose Add Element. Tick the box Import Geometry from File. That way it will go exactly where you put it.

It will only put <default> if you don't give it a name yourself.
Just Edit the object and change it to whatever you want.

Yes you can have two things with the same name - not a good idea obviously!!
The '96dpi' message you are getting does not sound like a TurboFLOORPLAN message, especially because it is not optimised for printing anyway and TFP does not have any provisions for changing the 'dpi' anyway (as far as I know or can find). Maybe the message is coming from software related to your printer, as it sounds more like a printer message.
Is TFP connected to an actual printer or to a PDF printer? What does the message actually say in full? Can you take a screen print of it and post it here?

In this case, I think that the 96 dpi message is related with the screen resolution regarding the minimum TFP settings
In the help files, check the topic called "Improving Graphics Display" --> as you are adjusting the screen resolution --> go to Advanced --> Display--> DPI settings --> Normal --> 96 dpi

I searched Help and the Users Guides for DPI - no reference (except in the Glossary). I did find the 'Improving Graphics Display', but in trying to follow the directions there found they do not apply to Windows 7 and I could not find these DPI settings from your directions either (XP?). I seem to recall that anon125 is using XP, so that will solve his problem and I know I have seen them before (presumably when I had XP) but just wondered if you know where they are in Windows 7? I am just curious about this, not that I have these problems - just for my own information.

Some notes
1 - Regarding the instructions--> yes, the DPI reference is not mentioned in the Help files. This is the issue: the DPI message means a screen resolution problem, so my advice is--> set the screen resolution according with the minimum TFP requirements (as per the Help files) and in the process, set the DPI value to 96
2 - Yes, I described the instructions for XP (I think that user mentioned this OP before)
3 - For Win 7 --> Right Click on your desktop --> Personalize --> display --> Change Display settings--> Advanced
