Title: Making new Elements! Locking dimensions?
Post by: hanker on September 03, 2010, 03:13:30 AM
I can edit and save my own element to catalog one by one but is it possible to save more than one element in same time?
ie Stair & Railings.

Is it possible lock outside and some inside walls dimensions? I can now give walls length (mm) directly by keyboard but it is
not working all dimensions? Why?

The best way to save elements to catalog that you have done, is to export them as 3ds then import them direct to the catalog "Element Manager". I have a little trick, I  use a separate  location that I call woodwork there I draw my one elements when i need. Then is it easy to export the elements, you only have to turn of every location and terrain without the woodwork location before you export to 3DS. The best is that you have a backup of your element, if the cataloge crash and you got also a option to import, "Object Wizard" it direct to you drawing without yo need to save it in catalog.

I'm not shure what you meen with this, but one thing can I say,  you must have right catalog for the measurment unit. Look in the settings Units of Measure.

I try to do this but.. First I copy my own elemets to extra Floor as you. Then I export file to desktop to *.3DS file..   """then import them direct to the catalog "Element Manager"""". This later part dos not work my Element Manager. There is no
way to import any *.3DS files, only some *.BIM file?

When I start drawing walls I see many dimensions what I can change by typing new numbers. This dimensions disappear after wall is ready. I have to measured again length of the walls if I want to show most important dimensions just before
priting..I cannot change these dimensions by typing method.

Hi agian! To add a 3ds-element in the "Element Manager" , go the group right click select add element ther you will add your 3ds-file  but this will not work on all groups.

This groups will work, Appliances, Electrical Elements, Electronics, Equpment, Exterior Accessories, Exterior Furnituer, Exterior Structures, HVAC Elements, Irrigation, Plumbing Fixtures then you import (add) your own element 3ds, skp or dxf, or downloaded elements that not is bim. All other groups will you have a little toolbox, ther you can make your one walls or doors, how pop up then you will add a element.
Sorry that I dident tell you in last post.

Hi Hanker,

The image below was used earlier in another post but I covers the points Robert listed for adding 3DS files.  Earlier you referred to stairs and railings.  You could export your designed ones and import again but you would not be able to edit them any further (except textures and TOTAL size) and could only import them into the sections Robert listed. It may be better to Right Click and Add a new stair and save it with your own name and do the same for Railings.

In this subject you may find these posts useful (if you have not seem them already): http://forums.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,1130.0.html (http://forums.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,1130.0.html) especialy the PDF attached and http://forums.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,315.0.html (http://forums.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,315.0.html) especialy the PDF attached.

Re the Dimensions issue - you cannot type into the dimensions for printing.  If they are slightly wrong you can drag the green arrows of each dimension slightly to make it correct. You may need to set the Units Precision setting in Settings / Programme Settings / Units of Measure to get it to go to the exact dimension you want.  I assume you have Tools / Dimensions / Auto Exterior Dimensions turned on.

Sorry but as far as I know there is no way to lock a camera position as such.

For what it is worth, what I do is name the cameras that I want in a fixed position and I always have them set to the same height (eye level) and same view angle so if I do move one I can set those things back again.

If it is critical, as once when I had to align a movie with still images, I used the 2D Layout tools to mark the exact position of the camera. It can the be easily returned to the fixed positon.

Hope that helps.

Hi Hanker and Allan!
There is one way to seat a default position of the camera, you can do a template with that cameras you will have.
I have done a template with the standard 2 cameras and add 4 more cameras for outside view North-T, South-T, East-T, West-T and Top-T.

All extra cameras is placed on the middle of the edge of the terrain N,E,W,S default height 2nd floor 4724 mm target height 1th floor 4724 mm angel 60, target the middle of the drawing.
After you place all the cameras save your template.

Now if you will take a look with North-T camera you can move where you will, then you have finish look you can reset the camera (3D-view only) then the camera automatic go back to default position, but you have to reset target-point(red/yellow dot at the camera) manual.
This is one way you can do it, but is not the same as you ask for. But then you place a camera on the drawing the position you place it will be default for that camera, the you reset the camera will it go back to default if yo have move it, this is by default how the camera work. A camera on 2.nd floor will stay on 2nd floor at the position you place it and (direction and heigth and target-point will move to the camera but it not change the view so much)

Hi Robert and Hanker,

That is a good idea Robert as a way of having some pre-set camera positions for each side of the project and save as a default startup template - I might just do that, as the orthotrgraphic views annoy me becasue of the persective distortion.

I don't think it would solve Hanker's problem however, as I suspect the problem is to set a camera with very wide angle and height in a small bathroom, for example, and be able to return to that exact position/zoom/height later. Obviously the bathroom would be in a different place for each project so the default template camera positions would not work in that situation.

The Camera Reset button works well to return a camera to its originally inserted postion. If you can insert a new camera in the right place the first time it would be OK but it does not solve the zoom angle and height (unless they happen to be right too).  The only thing I can think of is to use the layout tools to mark two edges of the camera, so you can position it and write down the height and zoom angle (you can type the settings on the plan with the text tool if you want so you can remember them - it won't show in 3D). Bit messy to reset it each time though.  When I set a camera for a specific project I name it (eg Bathroom) and then I do not move it - I only move the unnamed ones (Camera 1, Camera 2 etc). Trouble is sometimes I forget!!

I think this is something we should request as an enhancement - move a camera and then lock it, so it becomes the new Reset Camera position.

Yes, locking (on/off) a camera would be a good idea.

I also use the view manager along with named cameras (and named views) to easily switch views and have a render view(s) setup for comparisons. Tho be careful to keep the camera and view in "sync" as you can change cameras in a view

If all else fails, I make a small text (.txt) file with notepad and all the camera settings in case I mistakenly move it....or simply take some screen shots of the important info and save a .jpg for future ref. along with the .bld file (same folder)
