I am unable to see my floors properly on my second floor, or if I try to change the look of the floor, it is a really patchy and sketchy looking wood floor. :-\ I have the 2009 version (14) of the software. Any advice?

It sounds as though you have more than one floor. In 3D view select the floor and press the delete key on your keyboard. That will delete one floor. Keep deleting until any other floors are gone then do a Ctrl/Z to undo the last one. Now you can change the appearance to what you want.
By default it will insert a floor automatically (unless you turn this off). If you want to change it from wood to carpet don't add a carpet floor, just change the surface texture of the automatic floor.
