Title: FloorPlan Versions
Post by: pastorlee on October 11, 2010, 12:21:29 PM
I am using FP8 and I was wondering if there was anyone else out there using as old as a version as me.
I want to try and start a little business with TurboCAD 11.1 and Floorplan V8 remodeling and floorplans and things like that.
I was wondering what yalls opinion was on using FP8 for this or do you think I should upgrade.  ???

I want to get the TurboFloorplan 3D 15 Deluxe or Pro (but probably deluxe) and was wondering about any input ayone might have on this program compared to the FP8.  :-\

I am on disability and would like to have a little extra income and thought I would do this since it is a passion of mine.  :(
So spending money right now on new programs is really not possible.
But like I was getting at, do yall think FP8 is a good enough to handle these projects?  :-[
Thank yall kindly for yalls time and input...................God Bless!

FP8 is still quite good and may do the job OK....BUT, TFP is several versions better and is still quite inexpensive and not only results in better renders but is also easier to use, faster, and can do more than FP8. You can probably get support from vendor and other users for the newer versions; FP8 is a dead horse now.

Perhaps your best bet is to write down what is important to you and your work and your clients....and how much do you value your time and sense of frustration when things are difficult or problematic.

Then do an honest comparison of the two programs to get a sense of which one best meets your needs.

Also suggest you download a trial TFP15 and take it for a ride/spin/trial/test to get a first hand feel.

Or perhaps you can find a very low cost TFP14 version  or even TFP12 and get most of the benefits but not spend much money at all.

Hi pastorlee,

A very important information is the type of computer, capabilities, OS, videocard, memory, etc

Verify the system requirements for the TC and TFP versions and remember that, some programs need specific hardware and they need specific drivers--> some drivers are not updated so your programs may not work with full capability

I agree with Doug that V8 was a good version - probably the best of that series although I preferred V10 as changes meant it was quicker to use.  From V12 however the program changed dramatically in what it could do and the file type is not compatible between the two.  If you wanted to open a V8 (or even V11 file) in V12 or later, you could not do it. As long as you do not want to do that, then the latest version is much better and will give more professional results.

If you do decide to upgrade to a later version then I would definitely get the PRO version NOT DELUXE.  Yes it is cheaper but many things are restricted and landscaping (if you are interested in that) is no where near as good.

You can get V12 from about $10 on Ebay. V12 is much more capable than V8. If you do get it make sure it is the PRO version!

One of the concerns that I have is if I do get the TFP 15. Will it interfere with the FP8. In other words i will still have it on the computer at my disposal.
I like it cause I can import the FP8 drawings into TCAD. I heard that TFP15 does not have that bridge to make that possible.

I am not a computer wiz or not even a computer linguist or the language. But here are some specs I found...Video CArd---NVIDIA Vanta/VANTA LT
           Sound card--VIA ac/97
          NEtwork VIA PCI 10/100MB FAst
I do know that I have 1GB RAM CD ROM, not a DVD/CD. My computer is like a 2004 model rebuilt to put simply, But I was going to get the download if I decided that way.

Hi again,

There is no problem haveing V8 and V15 on your PC. In fact you can have v12, V14 and V15 on the same PC and they will not affect each other but you can only run one at once. You would however be able to run V8 and V15 at the same time as they are totally different - as long as the PC could cope of course.

I will leave the PC questions to Pat to consider, as he is the expert in that direction. However if your existing PC is able to run V8, then it should be OK with V15 I think as resource requirements were similar.

Downloading the trail version will prove it for you. You can see how the PC copes, try everthing out and see if you like it (it is the FULL version - nothing is disabled except that it only lasts 15 days) and also try the File/ Export as a 2 DXF file. You should find the TurboCAD will open it as DXF is and 'international' standard unless being and older version of TurboCAD it has problems with it. There is no 'Bridge' (and I am not sure exactly what that did) but you can certainly open TurboFloorPlan's DXF file in TurboCAD, edit it and produce full working drawings.

V15 produces much more detailed plans than V8 did, so if you are wanting to produce plans you will probably find it much better. Even if you are only able to afford V12 from Ebay for example, the differences are not that great and V12 is a big advancement from V8. The V15 trial will give you a good idea what V12 can do.

As you have a 2004 computer, the first consideration is about the Windows version. Do you have Windows 2000 or Me or Windows XP?

Now the bad news--> regarding the video card. The video card is a hardware in your computer --> it is the responsible for the rendering process. In order to work, this hardware needs a software, called driver--> I checked with NVidia and your videocard is not longer supported. The last diver was released more than a year ago, so most probably V15 is not going to work.

Use the V15 trial version, use the rendering process, apply textures, etc and lets us know about the results

If you prefer to be sure--> go to Control Panel--> System--> General tab--> what info do you see there? --? then go to the Hardware--> Display adapters --> what info do you see there?

I am running TFP v14 on my netbook. It is XP with 1 gig of memory and a Mobile video card. So far I haven't had any major problems but I do simple designs. I bought TFP v15 for my desktop and when I tried to load it on the Netbook it gave me an error that the graphics card would not run it because it would only go to 1280 X 600 resolution. It appears the video card is the real determining factor for running version15.

My PC is nearly 6 years old and video driver has not been updated in over 5 years....runs TFP15 just fine...tho better to turn HA off just for renders to avoid some extra mouse clicks.  I also run many other new 3D programs OK.  But then every video card is different and maybe I got lucky. Ati Radeon 9600XT 512MB driving dual monitors each 1280x1024

And my old laptop (died a couple weeks ago) was over 5 years old and had no video driver up-dates at all; ran TFP15 perfectly well.  (NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200)

TFP is not very sensitive to older vid cards but is sensitive to certain system setups and won't run HA 'on' for some people/systems/PCs/setups/etc.  So a trial run is very much recommended.

ATI Radeon usually runs OK, specially the desktop cards. However, the OP's card is a very basic model so, I don't think it is going to work flalwless.
As I stated above and I agree with you, the trial version is necessary

Went to the places Control Panel -> System-> General Tab,
What I found was Windows XP Service Pack 2, AMD Athlon, 1.20GHz 1.00GB RAM

Hardware-> Device Manager-> Display Adapters
NVIDIA Vanta/VantaLT

I dont know if that helps any, but what I need to do is just to download the trial and see what happens with it.

Thank Yall Kindly

P.S. What is the latest FP Version. Is it 12? Could someone tell me that.

Been out of the TurboCAD and Floorplan game for about a 1 1/2 years, and I am just getting back into it serious again, so I apologize for what seems simple questions. Been at it now for about two months or so. Somethings I forget, but others are coming back to me like riding a bike. Other things are like being dragged behind a bike when it comes time to remember them.
But I thank God for the kind and helpful people here to answer questions.

The latest version of TurboFloorPlan is V15.

V12 was the version when the software was changed dramatically.

V12, (there was no V13), V14 and V15 are all much more advanced programs than V11 and previous versions.

Thank You Allan. So if I want to go with a version that is closest to V8, that would be V10 or V11.

One of my main concerns is the FloorPlan PrintSpace Maker.
I guess my best bet is to get V10 or V11 off Ebay and just work from there.

Depends really what your aim is. V10 and V11 are excellent programs (avoid V9 as there were a number of issues that never really got fixed until V10 came along). None of these programs are supported anymore, so you would not get any fixes of issues that may arise and may even have some PC issues, although if you are still using XP they should be OK.

The other problem would be getting help if you needed any, as the user forum for the version before V12 is not available anymore, and while myself and a few other here may remember what to do, we also may not and probably most, like me, have updated computers so do not have there old versions available anymore to be able to check.

You will have to refresh my mind on Print Space Maker as I can't recall its purpose. Was that for linking to TurboCAD? If so, it is not required from V12 on anyway, as TurboCAD can open the DXF file from TurboFloorPlan anyway.

You can probably get V14 on Ebay for about the same as you would V10 or V11, so I would definitely go for at least V12 or later and you will then be able to get any support you need on this forum also.

The best thing would be to try the V15 trial version. It will prove whether your PC will run it or not and whether it will do what you want. I got the impression from the first question, that you are mainly interested in plans rather than rendered images, so the PC may be OK.
