Is there a simple way to get a small window into the gable end?
I find it difficult to believe that IMSI would leave a problem like that to be sorted by trickery.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I have read one of the other posts and if it was the same one you read, then it does make it sound complicated. That however can happen when several questions are asked and it is not clear in the first place what the intention is. In your case you do not say whether it is single or two storey and the methods are different.
If the room is just single floor with a cathedral ceiling but the window extends into the gable, then that is not a problem. Insert the window into the ground floor wall, right click and elevate it to where you want it to be. Windows automatically insert with their top at door height so you need to elevate it as this is an exception. If there is a window underneath it at the usual level, then insert that (in 3D view is easier) and it will sit under the other window.
Usually however if you have a window in a gable, it is because there is an upper floor (attic or whatever) in which case the upper floor walls also have to be drawn and the window then inserted in the upper floor - just click it into the upper floor wall, making sure the wall is set in its Properties to Auto Extend.
Both of theses are all normal processes - nothing unusual really. Where the other post appeared complicated was probably because of not correctly understanding how an attic works. Because it is a second floor, it still has to have walls, even though the roof may come down to the floor. Even in a real house there is at least a timber plate where the roof meets the floor and this defines the edges of the attic. The wall HEIGHT (Defined in Settings / Building Locations) for the attic is the height of the VERTICAL part of the wall. If the walls have a baseboard (4" or 100mm for example) then the wall height is 4" and this will still accept a window as the wall will extend to the roof in the gable.
If the roof goes completely to the floor then the wall height is just a faction of an inch or 1mm for example. This micro wall defines the perimiter of the attic, so it will accept a floor and roof, just as the gound floor does and the micro wall will still extend into the gable and form any interior walls too. This micro wall will still accept windows and doors. The upper floor needs to be defined in Settings / Building Locations. A second floor is already provided - all you have to do is change the wall height to whatever the verical part of the the attic walls are or just 1mm or 1/8th inch - the other settings can stay the same, although if you will be inserting a ceiling, then it needs to be the same as the wall height also and set to cathedral with the angle the same as the roof.
Hopefully that has clarified things for you and you are able to insert windows in the gable, depending whether you have an attic situation or a room with a 'cathedral' ceiling and a high window in the gable part.
If it is still not clear just ask again where you need clarification.
