Hi All,

I have been trying now for some time to create a staircase that mirrors the one I have at home but really battling.

I need to create a straight staircase with a L-Type right with 4 stairs that is the same width as the straight staircase.
If anyone has any ideas how to do this it will be much appreciated.

Any help will be much great.

What is the problem you are having?

I think its pretty easy but not done one in ages.

Sometimes the problem is not enough space  (wall too close by small amount)....try doing one in middle of room, then move to side....or move wall away, install, move wall back

Can be done in two or more pieces if needed....allow for collisions.

Usually its a matter of playing with every control you can find and see help file for tips...then become imaginative to build in pieces if auto-build fails

Apologies, I don't think I explained my problem correctly.

I did do some searching around and came across a picture of a staircase in this forum which is exactly what I trying to create.
If you look follow this link you will see and picture of a staircase on the first post.
The picture represents exactly what I am trying to create and failing miserably.

All I want is a straight stair case with a right L turn that doesn't exceed the width of the straight staircase.

Did you read the help file for inserting and adjusting stairs?  Has good explanantions.

Did you find a set of stairs to insert from the catalog?  Find whatever is closest to what you want, insert, then select, rt-clk for 'properties' and adjust things until you get what you want.

Did you insert stairs? is that the problem?

Did you try to adjust stairs? is that the problem?

I  have tried everything that I can think of but still no joy, I  have also read all documentation but still cant find the solution.
Think I have changed every property you can think of in the properties section but still cant get it to do what I want.

I have chosen a L-Type Right and joined it to a straight staircase, I then tried to modify the properties of the L-Type Right but cannot make it the same width as the staircase, there is always a bit sticking out that forms the part of the L.

Just not sure if I have chosen the correct parts to create this staircase.

Any one have any ideas on how to create a staircase like the one I have attached?
I have tried everything possible and now starting to think this is not possible.

Try these steps (is how I do this)
1 - In the stairs catalog--> select L-Winder stairs--> select the desired width, turn, etc--> insert the stairs in your plan
2 - Right click the stairs--> properties--> set the type, height, steps, etc
3 - Go to the Basic tab--> in the second line you will see the number of steps--> retain this number (say you have 20 steps)
4 - Go to the layout tab--> you will notice that there are 3 segments --> stair 1 is the 1st straight segment / stair 2 is the L curved path / stair 3 is the 2nd straight segment  --> select the stair 2--> set the properties as desired--> check the number of steps of the L curved path (say you have 4 steps)
5 - Remember that the sum of the steps of the 3 segments must be 20 steps and, as developed in the step # 4 (above), in the segment number 2 (L segment ) must be 4 steps --> set the remaining segments to fit your staircase

Other option--> Go to the layout tab--> select the segment # 3--> delete-->  so you will have just the straight segment + the curved segment

Hi Draftcad,

Thank you very much for taking the time to give such detailed steps.

I have gone through all your steps you provided which is extremely close to what I have already attempted
to do but still not getting what I want.

After completing the steps and after deleting the segment 3 I am still left with a staircase that is L shaped
and not rectangular in shape like the one I added to the attachment.

I think I am ether missing something here or I am not explaining what I am tyring to create.

I have a straight staircase going down and then the last 3 steps start to turn to create the left exit but these
steps do not exceed the width of the staircase.

The attachment I added is what I need to create so any more assistance from yourself or anyone else reading this
will be much appreciated.

I think that we have a dims issue, but, as you didn't post the specs and in order to be 100% sure, lets do the following--> post an empty *.bld file with the stair you have now, and, please, let us know what is missing or is superfluous

Or if you prefer, post a picture of the current stairs + with the exact dims and specs of the stairs + the desired modifications so we can help you with the settings

Hi Pat,

Sorry for the delay in replying, was going to reply last night but one beer after work lead to another 6+ so was not on top form when I got home.

I have taken 3 pictures of the staircase so this should show you exactly what I am trying to create.
The dimensions are below but I have no issues creating the correct measurements regarding the height, width and step dimensions.
I am just hitting my head against the wall at the moment trying to create the last 3 steps.

700mm wide
2400mm ceiling height
10 straight steps
3 angles steps creating the left exit

Check the file attached, I think that this is the stair you wish, but if it is not, right click on the stair --> Properties --> and adjust the steps, width, etc

Hi Pat,

I have just downloaded your one and had a look at it but unfortunately this is still not correct.
The last step on the L-Type Right segment you created sticks to far out as it needs to end at the same width as the straight staircase.

let me know if you have any other ideas.

Check your pictures--> check the newel / handrails --> check the nose

Of course, if you prefer, you can adjust the steps

Hi Pat,

I have been following all your advise and understand what you are asking me to check but this still does not give me what I need to mirror what the stairs look like.

I have attached 2 images -

1) image called "Good stairs" - this is what I am trying to create
2) image called "Pat stairs" - this is the image you created for me

If you look at both these images you will see what the difference is and what I need to create.

I really appreciate your help and just want to get this sorted soon as this is now starting to delay my project.

What was/were the final change(s) to get your desired results?

I never did get the 100% desired result as I was hoping for but did get a design that is close enough to proceed with my project.

I ended up making the width slightly smaller and adding a banister to make it look wider which met my requirements.

Still very puzzled though on how Julian created this from the link in my first post but have to give up now as it has been driving me mad.

i am having the same problem but times 2.  I have a staircase that starts with 90degree turn goes straight and then turns back 90degrees.  It does this all within a 3' stairwell so the bottom step and top step can't extend out past the straight part of the stairs.  I have attached to pictures one is what my stairs look like and the other what they should look like (roughly).  It seems like in order to make this work I would have to set the radius on the L-Type sections to 0 but that doesn't seem to be possible.  I can adjust it down as low as 5" but that's it and a 5" overhang on the top and the bottom makes my stairs 10" wider than the stairwell.  I have attached a picture of what the stairs look like now, what they should look like and lastly what happens when I change the radius from 3'-3 3/8" to 3'-2 3/8" which is why I think the radius setting is the one causing the problem.  Any help would be much appreciated.

sometimes I find the "auto" solution, even after trying everthing imaginable for adjustments, does not work

An alternate solution is to make each turn as its own object....so maybe make two staircase objects or 3 staircase objects for all the treads/risers/landings etc....that all fit into the same space....with collision as 'on', they should all live happily together...tho fine tuning may be needed to align exactly so the result is it looks like one construct.

Thanks for the idea, but no luck with that either.  I can't create the upper or lower segments without running into the same issue.  I can't seem to create a L-Type stair with a 0 degree radius.  Any other ideas?  Thanks.

I don't particularly want to enter into this discussion as I hardly ever use stairs, so I would just be experimenting too. I noticed however your reference to "0 degree radius". Sometimes TFP will not accept zero but will accept anything even slightly greater. May be worth a try?
