Title: Auto floors vs Manual floors

I just noticed when you have "automatically insert floors" enabled the resulting floor framing is wrong.
As you can see from the image below the floor framing sits n the inside of the walls.

If you draw a floor by picking points the default snaps draw the floor the same way.

If you insert a floor by perimeter then the floor is inserted below the wall framing which is correct,
but it has a slight offset which causes the siding to blend in with the flooring as seen below.

Is there something that I am missing?

I know I can shift things to make it look right but that is not that way it should be.

I agree with you it seems like a couple bugs that could be easily fixed by programmers.

But have a small question... for manual floors render that shows framing and exterior wall in same plane/position with material "leak" thru....is that for all renders? or does a higher quality or radiosity render "fix" it?

Often low quality renders are exactly that (such as a screen display) and higher quality renders with better pixel definition reduce or eliminate the problem.

Hi Jeff,

Turn off floor framing.

Whenever two objects occupy the same space you get the results you are seeing. While in 2D mode walls can show such things as a width that accounts for siding or brick and 2D is important for proper plans.

When you have 3D the siding really has no thickness but is a thin plane that accepts a jpg or bmp that represents siding / brick etc. What you are seeing is bleed through. This will also happen if you where to add your own floor over and existing floor of the same 'height', it also happens in Fascia, Roof , Ceilings etc.

The way to prevent this is to turn off the floor framing when rendering or the wall surfaces.

This is just the nature of all 3D surface interaction that I have seen in many programs. If you add 'thickness' to the siding in 3D then you really start getting into mathematically nightmares as you then must tell the program to adjust when siding meets a corner or switches from exterior to interior wall.  Another aspect of this problem would be with corner trim. The program really doesnt apply a corner and butt the siding into it, but adds a trim member over the top of the thin suface.

Jack I think the problem is caused by the floor being wider then the walls, which it shouldn't be.

Screen displays are often very incorrect for objects that overlap the same space or have large depth differences.....all because the rendering engine is setup for fast display (to our advantage) and takes shortcuts on quality....this is very common on all 3D programs.....which is OK for screen displays, but not OK if same problem shows in a high quality render.

Having said that...anytime two objects occupy the same exact 3D space...render engines have a problem interpreting what the user wants...but you can fix that by a very small position change (I mean as small as 0.0001")(within the accuracy of setup) so program knows which object is truly "in front".

Doug, this is not a screen display issue. Take a close look at this image. You can clearly see that the floor is offset from the walls. This was done by "floor by perimeter". This is an incorrect draw. I should not have to fix this as it should be automatic. That is what is causing the blend of the siding and the framing.

Jeff,

I think you are right - there appears to be a slight extention of the Perimeter type floor as your image shows. This is probably only a millimeter or two beyond the walls and this is causing the bleed through the wall surface. 

As the images below show it bleeds through differently on the screen view compared with the rendered view. The third view has the wall Drop Exterior Face set to zero and the floor edge set to the same siding as the walls so it appears to be continuous. The slight protrusion of the wall is certainly not visible now.  If you render it without the floor edge set to siding it still does not show the protrusion. It is as if the floor protrusion allows for the wall surface thickness, although I guarentee it actually has no thickness in reality.

The protrusion is so small I would not imagine it would not cause any problem in the model or quantities etc.  To avoid the bleed through the simplest thing is as Jack said, to turn off the frame visibility since you would not normally see the framing on a completed building anyway.

Excellent research work...I agree you uncovered a BUG

Looks like we have a temporary work-around but I would hope programmers will fix in next release.

Dave Taylor....do you agree and do you forward all bug reports from this forum to developers if you agree they are bugs? or should we...after doing the research as Jeff did, report directly to CadSoft.com?????
