Title: Strange radiosity artefacts appearing. Are they fixable?
Post by: timf on August 17, 2011, 05:01:00 AM
Hi All

Thought I would show you all some of the work I have been doing in TFP15 on a new house I'm planning to owner build later in the year. Many thanks to Allan and Jack for all their tips and feedback on all the threads here....has been very very helpful.

I have started to get a number of artefacts appearing in the render of the kitchen. Cupboard doors that I have triple checked are painted the same colour as all the other cupboard fronts are appearing much brighter as if the radiosity is being calculated incorrectly.  I can photoshop them if I have too but would rather get it correct. Does anyone have any tips on how to fix?

btw. I have tried cloning the pigeon pair cupboard just under the corbels of the rangehood surround but that just moved the error to the other side!

The other 2 pics are the master ensuite and main bath. Though both need a little work with the lighting seeing as how I've learnt a LOT doing the kitchen.

Any/all feedback greatly appreciated.

Tim

Hi Tim,

Interesting feature - illuminated drawers!!  Ignoring that the renders themselves are very good!! Look really nice and you have obviously put a lot of work into them.

A few questions / suggestions that may help.

I have see this happen before and the last time the user had actually inserted dozens of the same cupboard on a different location i=accidentally. The Location or Cabinets were turned off in the view filter so they disappeared when they were inserted so he just kept adding - to no avail. The end result was that all the ones that were finally inserted, when rendered, had glowing cupboard doors!  Why? Who knows? but deleting all the invisible cupboards fixed the problem. Based on that situation, is it possible you have additional cupboards that are not visible?  It could be something else that causes a similar effect.

Delete one - is it still there? (in other words 2 in the same space).

Have you tried designing a different cupboard to make it the same and the right click and use Replace to change it. May work.

Hare you tried File / RepaIr Project. There could be something corrupt in the model that is causing the effect.

When you swap the couboards over does the effect move with the cupboard?

Let us know how you go with those tests. Save first and work on a copy!

Re the other renders and the suggestions you asked for:

On the Master Ensuite:

I would reduce the refection on the edge tiles that are in the door recess - it is too shiny so it makes it look like the wall is hollow and you can see the grass through it. Reducing the reflection would make it look better I think. The rest of the tiles could stay as they are.

Minor thing but the towels on the shelves need to be lowered a little as they are floating.

I am not sure of the cause but the vanity top does not look normal as there is no shadows from the things on it. Is it the normal cupboard top surface? Is it too reflective or does the texture have the Emissive setting greater than zero?

The Master bathroom looks pretty good. The back corner of the shower appears to have a step in the wall - should it?

If it was me I would probably move the camera viewpoint so that the downlight at the top is not in view (or move the light a little bit).

I would probably also change things so that the reflection of the window in the mirror does not refect part of the outside of the building as it looks a bit odd. You would expect to see something similar to what you see looking out of the window itself. It looks as though you are using artificial lights to illuminate the outside which is probably why it does not look quite right - it sort of looks as though it is daylight outside the window but nighttime in the refection.

Apart from that it looks fine.

wow. Thanks Allan for all those comments.

The artefact inside the rear door (butlers pantry) was caused by a low hanging light. I lowered all the fluro light globes by 1m but hadn't actually pushed the fitting all the way to the ceiling.

After a fair bit of testing last night, I believe the artefacts on the cupboard fronts are caused by a bug in the mirror function. All three cupboards were mirrored so that the handles would appear on the other side (LH -> RH) as there is no option to do so in the cupboard setout screens.

Agree on the reveal in the master ensuite. Only just this morning worked out that the reveal materials is set in the 'openings' appearance of the Wall settings so will be able to change just that components' reflectivity. The cabinet top is the same material as the walls (a custom material using a jpg from the tile manufacturers' website  :) ). Will look into why there is no shadows.

With the back corner of the shower in the master bath. That is a wall break caused by an intersecting wall on the otherside. TFP could be improved to handle that situation better however it is easy to fix for renders by just detaching the wall on the reverse side temporarily.

The reflection in the mirror is actually correct. The house is a big L shape so looking in the mirror you would actually see that wall of the other wing but yes, I was using an external light to simulate the sun so the reflection coming back off that wall is not 100%!. I will add another light so that wall is better lit.

Many thanks for your comments and interest. After having used 3D Home Architect, Punch and MyVirtualHome, I have found TFP is one very powerful program and by far the best of them. Certainly making the missus happy now that she can 'visualise' the rooms.

Thx

Tim

:) Yes the illuminated cupboards. That was an experiment that worked very nicely. Some of the early renders without them had just a very dark look ( ie black holes) that just didn't appeal.

They consist of a flush mount downlight attached to the underside of the top of the cupboard with a 15w CFL flush mount globe reduced to 50% with the globe lowered 150mm. The shelves are 'tinted glass 3' with 1% specular and 80% transparency. This allows the light through both shelves to brighten the cups etc on the bottom shelf. Works a treat!

I will try some tests on that myself too.

If you dont get anywhere with this, try turning off the cabinet top and insert one made of something else (eg a piece of floor, the Custom Member from Interior Accessories / Decorative or just a Member, which will give you the curved front edge option)

Yes a bit of a pain that - needs to be fixed as per other post.

Yes I found TFP was by far the best. The problem now is of course that your wife will expect the house to be built as quickly (or quicker!) than the model!!  Will you be able to live up to her expectations?  ;)

Very nice work Tim,

Exactly what are the settings you applied to the cabinet?  I see the backspash is off, did you set Dado or any other settings?

Re: Kit Cabinets. What happens when you assign another material?

I've not seen that happen before.

update, it looks like the Drawer material is set to Emissive... materials can have the same name but different settings. I wish the program would add a 2 or 3 or 4 after materials using the same base but different advanced properties..

Could you use the eyedropper, click on the drawer materials, go to that material and check it's Emissive setting?

Hi Jack

Yes splashback is off. dado was the default. increased the nosing depth to 28mm, height to 25mm, added a radius of 15mm. handles to cylinder. cabinet dimensions don't seem to affect it as I have it occur on multiple sizes.

The colour is an RGB equivalent of Ben Moore Hepplewhite Ivory texture (Paint-Historical Colors). I tried both the texture and the RGB colour - no change! I have also tried rotating both the texture the RGB, 90 and 180 degrees. no change. I have tried several other base colours and textures and all come out over exposed. In all cases, specular, emissive and transparency at 0% and color bleed at 100%.

This occurs whenever I mirror a cabinet. I mirror in-situ to about 135 degrees, delete the original cabinet then re-orient the mirrored cabinet to the correct aspect.

Does this occur (try to replicate the problem to verify the source) for you if you start a new model, single room, single floor house...and only insert the kitch. cabinet as you described?

I'd run the wizard to "build" the one room house....to eliminate as many other variables and with a known good model.

This would "verify" a bug or not down to few details that programmers could test easily....then fix it.

Hi Doug, Tim and Jack,

I have tested this out and it appear to be a bug (but only in a cabinet that is mirrored) and there is a secondary issue with the recess which appears to be transparent. If the door is set to plain (not with a Recess) then it will also go bright but not quite as bright and the drawer if it has a recess will not go bright but the recess will be transparent.

In the image the left hand cabinet and left hand draw sets are the mirror of the right one. The 3 draw set did not go bright white but the recess was still affected as was the the recess on the door on the left hand cabinet.

It appears to happen with the paint colours (Ben Moore paint files in the catalogue) but not with my own created BMP or JPG files. It also did not happen with Ben Moore colours (BMP) that I Added from the Textures Folder or with photographic textures which rendered normally (see first image right cabinets). May be related somehow to the 'green fence' issue.

I will report the issue as it is clearly repeatable and affects Envisioneer too and the previous versions.

Try this.

Change the colors (using the same BenMoore) after you have Mirror copied the original.

You must insert original with default textures, it seems you can adjust the items in properties like backsplash, dado door, cylinder hardware (set to black?) but don't assign the BenMoore color and don't have any other mirrored copies in the model.

Then mirror and change the colors of both the original and mirrored. '2 after jpg' is actually a mirror copy right , after the color of original and mirror copy left were changed. The other test failed when 2nd copy was made of using new materials....

The 'black' dado results in surface face being lost in Mirror process (invisilble as Allan points out). You are seeing the dark inside of the cabinet. You could add a thin column inside the cabinet if you wanted it perfect. That is not a bug, just the nature of the programs surfaces.
