Title: copy object(s) from .bld to .bld ???
Post by: Doug.S on February 16, 2012, 03:03:24 PM
This question gets asked occasionally and the answer is no, not directly.

But if something is not needed for future editing (except for applied materials and scale/size), then this approach can work:

From TFP, export object)(s) (best to hide what you can because everything visible will be exported) as .3ds (.dxf works but file sizes are much much larger, but better organized/named)

Import .3ds to another 3D program (I used Carrara 8 pro), delete unwanted stuff, change as needed, (group it is good); export/save-as .3ds

Import (I used wizard to place in scene, not saved to catalog this time) to TFP different .bld file, scale, position, finish....voila done.

Easy...but has some limited features....can't change individual object pieces

I just did this (see attached) and very happy to not have to re-create this balcony for use again for a different project. Total time about 15 min. vs. much longer to re-build from scratch as there are many pieces (tho I did use 'array' for some of it).

If some change were needed, one could break the object into more parts (more .3ds files) ...say remove the balusters and insert different ones in new scene.
