Fills are a Terrain function - they can be set to any colour or pattern and be used on any part of the Terrain. That would work inside the house too if you did not insert floors and turned off 'Autocut Terrain around building' (Setting/ Program Setting / Terrain) so that the Terrain flows right through the building.
You could also use different coloured floors for the same purpose.
For colour printing use 2D Designer's View or 3D Quick View - centre button and File Export.
To use hatch patterns and normal print functions, set the display to Patterned View for the patterns to show up. Elements must be assigned a Pattern of couse in the Floor or Fill's Properties first of course and the individual patterns can be set to any colour but it does not work well for the Fill tool unfortunately because the Terrain mesh cannot be turned off and that confuses things somewhat. You can turn off the Terrain and leave the Fills on but you still get the mesh lines in the Fill. Floors with a pattern work OK with the Terrain off. You can divide the Floors if necessary with the Room Divide tool or simply draw the Floors "By Picking Points" to make your various areas. Floors are probably the best way to go with this.

The reason you cannot select it is probably because you are in Patterned View - in the Plan's normal (wireframe) view the floor is only maked by the perimeter line, so cannot be selected in the middle. However you can stay in Patterned view but make the Floor unselectable in the View Filter (click the filter Icon in the last column so it goes white, not orange).
The range of colours available to Floors or Fills should be the same as they use the same Materials catallouge and you can add colours up to the number of colours available on your computer (which is thoudsands of course). Floors would still be best for your purposes though I think.

Thanks Alan, another great suggestion. Switching to Wireframe or Patterned View allows easy access to the text. Compared to some of your other posts on this site I know my questions are kind of lame but your advice has helped me a lot.
