Title: Creating Hip Roof and Gables
Post by: mzens on June 09, 2012, 11:46:46 AM
I am having a great deal of difficulty creating a simple ranch style roofline with three [3] gables.  There have been many discussions on this but I do not understand how BREAKS work, where to start gables at, which edge to drag, etc, etc.  Why won't TFP creat a simple hip roof off the main roof without having to modify in so much deatil?  This is a very common design and construction.

As you can see by the attachments I can get the East and South Gables correct but the West side is completely distorted.  Could someone please explain to me in detail so I can get it thru my thick skull, how to make this work.

Hi Mark,

A Break (right click) simple breaks the egde of the roof into two, so the two parts have their own arrow and hence can be changed to Gable or whatever separately to the other part of the same edge of the roof.

Drag simple means to use the mouse to drag that edge where the arrow is, out (or in). You use this if necessary to drag or extend that paert of the roof away from the rest of it - you should not need to do that in your case.

Try the image below and see if it helps - no dragging needed - just make a Break in line with the other part of the roof and change the section you want to gable. MAKE SURE that only that section of the roof edge is green.

Finally got it Allan.  It takes doing the steps in the right order but it finally worked.  Thanks!

Hi Mark,

Just move the new Gable green arrow slightly away from existing if your ridge doesn't match up.

Allan, still having trouble with creating this roof design, I am following your instructions to the tee, and all is well until I tick the display gable box. When I do the gable end protrudes above the normal roof line as shown. I also find it impossible to line up the roofs to create two valleys as shown on the screen dump. I am obviously doing some thing wrong but I cannot figure it out.

Hi Bob,

I will deal with the second question first.

Using your plan orientation as posted on the forum, do the following:
1.  Change to 2D Designers View (icon between Plan and 3D views)  - this shows the plan rendered from overhead.
2.  Select the roof.
3.  Right Click and Select Match Planes
4.  Click the lower right section of the roof (to the right of the line you want to remove)
5.  Click the lower left section of the roof (to the left of the line you want to remove)
The planes will align and line will go.

Now to the first issue:

I had the same result and have to admit I have not come across this before - it appears to me to be a bug but I need to check it out.  If you drag that gable out slightly it will go but as soon as the roof edge comes close to the hip edge of the roof, it will return. I assume you want the roof edge in line ,so draging it out is maybe not an option. The only immediate workaround I can see is to set the wall to autoextend. The only problem with this is that you get the same texture in the gable and I am assuming you want a different texture in the gable ends (obviously or you would have autoextend on).

I will make some enquiries to see if there a trick to get this to work or if there is a two texture workaround for this.

Allan, once again thanks for your help. Yes I want the gable end to be weatherboards and the the walls brick.

Allan, I have been playing around with the roof overhangs and noticed that if you increase or decrease the gable end overhang all weird roof shapes occur. I assume that this in not the norm.

I'm seeing the same issue with TFP3D H&L Deluxe 14.0.C2.662.

The house on ground level (at the top on the 2D view) is my cheated 3-gable roof and the other house is the correct gable roof.  Note that the "extra" gable will disappear on the ground level house if the cheated wall is moved inboard 1ft.

Regards,

Hi Bob,

Sorry about the delay!  I posted the query on the Envisioneer forum, confirmed that it was a problem, reported it to Support, got some workarounds - and forgot to get back to you with the options!  :-[

The best of the workarounds was to create another wall on another location to 'cover' the gable, but I have just looked at it again and come up with an easier option using the same wall and existing functionality.

It involves using the Wall's Trim 'Wainscot' option.

1.  Set the existing gable wall to the siding texture you want on the gable.

2.  In wall's Properties, go to the Trim tab, choose Exterior from the dropdown list and scroll down to Custom.

3.  In the Catalogue choose Wainscot and Add a new one that is the same height of your wall (eg 2400) plus the 'DropFace' (eg 300 so a total height of 2700).

4.  Set the Appearance texture to the brick of your other walls.

5.  Set Offset to the 'Drop Face distance (eg Minus 300) so it drops the Wainscot to cover the Drop Face (bottom of the wall)

6.  FINALLY: Set the Trim Basepoint to Bottom Of Trim. This must be done LAST or it will revert to Top of Trim and place the wainscot below ground level!  ::)

Effectively this method will place a brick surface over the full wall but leave the gable's timber texture still showing with the rest of teh wall covered by the wainscot's brick texture.

Interestingly the lastest version of Envisioneer has two options for Display Gable. One is Surface which has the same problem as currently but the other option 'Wall' works OK. Hopefully TFP will inherit this functionality in its next version.

Sorry again about the delay!

Thanks Allan, there seems to be a work around for most problems.
