Title: Creating New Exterior Elements
Post by: mzens on June 15, 2012, 08:28:43 AM
I would like to create some exterior architectural elements for my home.  Things like knee braces at the roofline and exposed truss features.  Can someone explain to me where to find anything like these in the catalog and how to create them from scratch.  If anyone has some examples of what they have done in the past, I would love to see them.

Hi Mark,

Not sure what you mean by "knee braces at the roofline" but you will find some decorative item (Trusses, corner decorations) in Interior Accessories / Decorative.

If you cannot find what you want, them provide an image or drawing and someone else may already have something they will share.
Bear in mind you can create almost any shape you want in TFP. See this post: http://forums.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,1130.0.html (http://forums.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,1130.0.html)
You can also Search Google for 3DS and SKP objects. Google Sketchup Warehouse is a good source of objects but bear in mind that imported objects have been reported to cause corruption of the model in some situations and can also inflate the size of the model dramatically causing a slowdown of the program. TFP created objects are probably 'safer'.

A few architectural examples in the image below.

Allan, I noted in the file of your architectural drawings that you created a fancy cornice.Great work. How would you go about creating a standard 90mm cove cornice which is commonly used in Aussie houses. Would you create using the floor tool or convert an existing member.

Hi Bob,

I think that particular cornice was just an existing profile (see image 1)

You can however create a Member profile any shape you want, if you click Add  and go to Custom. You then draw the shape using straights and curves. It is essential that the outline of the shape join up at the end - if it is open it will not work. It must create a totally enclosed space. For a simple cove you must have the back of the cove as well as the front, as if you are drawing a cross section of the cove shape - in effect the 'cardboard' surface around the typical Gyprock cove. The second image gives the basic directions.

Incidentally it is much easier to do in Envisioneer as you can draw the shape 'freehand' using the line tools, but the extra cost makes for a very expensive cornice!!  ;)  The curvy bits on the light fitting image were done with tiny sections of a member profile. Once the shape is created it can just be stretched like a wall to whatever length and mitred automatically on corners. See the fourth image where the light fitting ptofile has been stretched. Although you could get the same result using Walls or Floor cutouts to make the light fitting you cannot turn the wall or floor shape into a stretchable, mitreable member, although you could lengthen it just by typing in the length.

Allan, thanks for the detailed reply. I will no doubt have some further questions after I digest our methodology.
My the way, you are missing nothing not being up with the Simpsons.

Allan, I have endeavored to follow your instructions in trying to creating a new profile of a 90mm cornice, without too much success. The screen dumps show the results I have achieved to date. The cornice fits to the wall ok but the shape is not correct. Obviously I am doing something wrong, can you please help.

Hi Bob,

The question is a bit hard to answer because I don't know what shape you want to achieve. What I imagine is a square back and curved front, in which case you probably just need the arc between to two open ends.

Can you draw the profile and post it on the forum so I can see the shape?

Allan, the profile I am trying to create is a 90mm coved cornice commonly used in the building industry in NSW, see attached photograph.
Many thanks Bob

Hi Bob,

That is the profile I thought you meant.

In the image below I have shown how it is done. It is fiddly but does work. I should have started with both the Distance and Radius as 1 but it still works as you can set them both to 90mm once you have the profile created. I know you know where to get to the profile creator but have posted the first image in case some others want to try it and don't know how to get there.

I have also attached a BIM with it in (in case you give up on creating it  ;) ) TFP may say the BIM was 'created with a later version' but should still import it after you click Cancel.
