I'm afraid I don't know the house, so I don't know if it looks 'authentic' or not, but it looks good!! I don't know Homer either, ::) (although I have seen the character around the place). I assume he is related to the house(?).
Since you were trying to 'improve your skills', why didn't you insert Homer as a photoboard? It would have been good practice and would also have given you the shadow too,without having to add that also.
A challenge for next time you have a spare minute! ;)

You honestly haven't heard of the Simpsons? Allan you need to get out more! As you correctly observed I haven't yet tried the photoboard technique. I'm on holidays now so I might get a chance to start experimenting with some of these tools.

Yes I have heard of the Simpsons and was aware that Homer was connected somehow but the house means nothing. I must admit my only knowledge of the Simpsons is the occasional ads promoting it on TV - I have never actually watched it. I usually only hear TV in the background if my wife is watching something and I may occasionally glance up if something really exciting happens (like the attack on the twins towers or an ad for TurboFloorPlan ;) )

Easiest way to find info on the Photoboards, as they have been referred to many times is by using the forum search. Search for photoboard (obviously!) - that is all I would do as i do not know of any specific one. Magenta would be another work that would find them too. All you do is cut out the image as you did withn Homer but fill the outside of the rectangle with Magenta (RGB 255, 0,255) and save as a BMP (NOT JPG!!!). The Magenta become transparent. The just File/Import.

Happy to say I have never watched a Simpson's show either.
Instead of magenta for transparency (or "in addition to"); this would be a good time to continue to ask IMSI to add ability to use .png files that handle "transparency".
Okay...got Homer in as a Photoboard... this skill adds a whole heap of new and exciting possibilities to my work...I could add in photos of my clients "in" their prospective new home...very cool!

The secret to getting a really good effect is to take the photo with the lighting similar to your end result (sun on the right side for example) and have the background as clear as possible so it makes the 'cut out' process easier. If you can get the tree/person against a clear sky or plain painted wall, for example, is probably ideal.
If you insert a photo and then realise that the light on the photo is from the wrong direction, you can just flip the photo on your computer and it will flip in TFP (when you close the model and open it again). Can work with most things. The client may not notice that the parting of their hair is on the wrong side for example, but they may notice if they had a slogan on a teashirt! ;). You can also select the photoboard itself and rotate it, if it is not set to ratoate automatically when the camera moves (Billboard). If Homer was set to Stationary you could select him and using the blue triangle, turn him around so he faces the other way.
When I first rendered the swimming pool in this post: http://forums.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,2085.0.html (http://forums.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,2085.0.html) I did it from the oposite corner, but then decided this angle looked best, so I just rotated the images. Photoboards have the same image on the other side but in reverse, so you can make the same tree look different for example by turning it around - but it will not work that way if they are set to Billboard - must be Stationary and then you must angle them so they exactly face the camera. Unfortunately they can sometimes become refective if a big reglective surface is involved - as in the swimming pool. Moving the camera or photoboard angle slightly will often fix it.

Tried putting myself into the 'Sample 5' picture, and have now saved it as a photoboard in the 'animals' catalogue (how appropriate) for use in future projects...another skill learnt, 400+ to go...
