Title: Park Bridge
Post by: garystan on July 02, 2012, 12:41:16 PM

     Hi everybody :

I need some advice on this project.    I pretty much have it completed.  But,  I'm trying to find the   "right"   people to insert.    I found a couple of  3D people.    One was a woman walking with her son.   Another one, with a woman sitting on a bench.
First of all,   I can't seem to find the "right"   person.   Most of the ones that I did find looked like zombies with arms stretched out.
Second, I DID see a few  2D persons.  But, the shadows wouldn't be correct.
With a 3D person,  I got nice shadows projected from them.  And under them. A 2D person would only have that line for a shadow.
And, I DO want to make this scene look like a Saturday afternoon in the park. You know.....a little more busy than what  I made it.      Other than people,  I'm not sure what else to put into the scene.   Even though I know it need  "something"   to  liven it up.

                                                                                                            garystan

Hi garystand!
Ther is not many 3-D people online.
The best way to is to do the people in a dedicated  program that can export 3DS , even they are rather expensive  that is not easy to do people, but with rather much work I think you can do it TFP with one front and one from behind texture.

Robert W :

Could you explain further on front and back textures?    I think I know what you mean, but not 100% sure.     And, yes,  some of the 3D People can be expensive.    That's where knowing how to  make your own 3D people comes in handy.
I don't know if this is  a turning point for me......wanting to add people to my TFP projects.      Anyway.............

That is the same principe you use in walls outside and inside walls, so if you look on 3D-figure from the top must you split the figure in 2 half on the to the front and the other half to the back.
I have not done my self but it can be a challenge to do it in TFP

You could get free 3D program that is primarily used for people: DAZ3D.com  "DAZ Studio" It comes with several people in 3D and their clothes; but it is another 3D program with a learning curve but you have nearly unlimited capabilities.

I'd look for .skp SketchUp files from Google for some people.

For your image:
- scale of park benches seems out of scale to bridge
- "handrail" on top edge of brige has same texture extended to it; should be different as construction not done that way
- bridge stones seem too large?
- up close tree on right has blurry pixelated outcome; blurry OK, square pixels not so good...use a higher quality image.
- as mentioned elsewhere, textures on far walls look wrong
- "concrete" (under bridge and park bench) looks too uniform; try finding some real concrete photo textures to make it more real and dirty; add leave on the ground
- view seems to head-on and symmetrical; try another view angle
- Ask yourself: what is intent and purpose of the scene? mood? that may help answer what to add.
- add a "to scale" person billboard to check scale of bridge to park bench to walls etc.

Since 2D/billboard images are much easier, you could "paint" in shadows in post processing in Photoshop or similar.

For more ideas, Google search images of park scenes...to see what you might see; then add the objects....a water feature comes to mind in most city parks as well as animals and people.  People could be in distance rather than main feature? People show scale well.

Adding to what Doug has said, I made this very quick image of Bob the builder out the front of my home using a very low-res Targa image of Bob and rendering in Advanced mode.  On occasions  the shadows fall incorrectly using this method, but you can touch them up in Photoshop (or similar).  It's a very cheap way of introducing people.  Other than that, I use Poser (an older copy is very cost effective) to create people in any shape / clothing / pose that I want and export / import them into TFP as 3DS files as solid figures.

Hi Garystan,

I just dropped some people, into a 'lake' model I had done earlier and there was no problem with shadows in Basic or Advanced (the image is Advanced as it did the water much better than Basic).

The secret with the shadows is to make sure the sun is not coming onto the people from the side. Because they are only 2D, hence no thickness, if the sun comes from the side it will just create a very narrow shadow. With the sun from the front or back they should be fine (if set to billboard). If they are set to stationary the shadow can detach from the image.

The best source for people images is Google. Just search Images for Man Sitting, Woman Running etc you will get thousands to choose from. Many will be on a white background, so it is very easy to 'cut them out', resize if necessary, then change the background to Magenta and save as a BMP file (NOT JPG).  You can also try TARGA but I have had no success with that format. This is especially so if the image is Stationary as it creates a rectangular shadow regardless of the shape of the image.

Most of the people in the image are already in TFP. The others were from Google. If any are useful let me know and I will ppost them to the forum for you.
