Title: Stability of TFP
Post by: Burgo on July 18, 2012, 06:07:23 PM
Recently, I have been drawing more complicated roof designs and find that the program is crashing on a more frequent basis. Is this normal and does Envisioneer suffer from the same problem, or could it be my computer.

Hi Bob,

TFP and Envisioneer are both VERY STABLE - they are essentually the same, Env just having extra 2D drawing fubctions. I use one or both every day and cannot remember the last time either crashed. Usually the only crashes I experience are projects users who have had problems have submitted and, almost always, the problem causing the crash is a bad wall join or occasionally an imported object from other 3D programs.

Computer issues can also cause problems but this is less frequent. You could try turning off Hardware Acceleration in Program Settings / Graphics. If that helps then you may need to get the latest video driver for your PC. Pat is the expert in that area so I will leave him to comment further here if necessary.

Hi there,

usually, the program crashes for 2 reasons
1 - when the program asks the computer to perform activities above the computer's capabilities --> for example, rendering complicated 3D objects imported from other programs (because they have many polygons). Roofs are native TFP elements, so I don't think that this is the case here
2 - When the file is corrupted --> I think that this is the problem here --> try the following resources
- Use File --> repair project
or
- Do you have lots of furniture or 3D objects? --> this may cause the crash
or
- Verify if you have a corrupt object causing the crash
or
- Verify if you have any walls / roofs / points corrupting the file

If the above solutions don't work, feel free to post the bld file, so we can test it in our computers

Hi Bob,

Is it only crashing when you render? If so, turn off the wallz and render again. If it is OK then a wall is corrupt somewhere. If it still crashes, turn off something else and try again.

If you can't find aything, as Pat said, post the file or email it to me if you prefer.

Hi Bob,

I really don't know of any particular bugs in the program that cause crashes. There are a number of do's and don't associated with roofs and roof building techniques. If you have a corrupt roof element it will normally 'crash' while creating the roof. You can also get error messages while rendering but normally not a crash per say.

If you have had no big problems in the past, I would rule out computer and look to user error. Somehow you have created a roof that the programs 3D calculations doesn't like, if in fact the crash is occuring only when working with roofs. Look for overhangs that encroach each others space, pitches that are not reasonalbe, openings that are cut , odd soffit heights.

I have tried to cover most of the basics of creating roofs in my training videos and with those basics gone into creating complex roofs. If the basics are not done correctly the 3D aspect of your roof can cause problems but this is not  a programing error. The training videos will help you solve and create most any roof or roof element.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I will take then on board and if I cannot resolve the problem I will post the file.
