I was trying to create our home and then add on some additions and am having some problems in trying to have elements properly displayed. Not sure what I am doing wrong.
1) For my exterior walls I have an oak door sill that projects out like I want it to, but it does not extend under the door. It appears that the interior floor extends part way into the door opening but then there is still another gap. What I would like is to have the door sill extend into the house under the exterior door. What am i doing wrong? I tried changing variables for the wall, door and floor, but have not found the key to it.
2)I orginally built the existing house and then added on the additions that we are designing. The original house looks fine, but when I put on the additions I have gaps now on the original gable ends plus they appear to be missing pieces. The gable ends on the house do not have an overhang, but i had to put in a small overhang or the Trim on the gable ends did not display correctly. Now I also can't edit the trim width for the gable ends.
Not sure what I am doing wrong and any help would be appreciated. I attahced png files of the examples.
Hi Grant,
You are not doing anything wrong with the door sill - this feature of the wall is only the bit that extends out from the wall. The floor is obviously set to go to the centre of the wall.core not the perimeter so you could just drag it out but that will still be the floor texture. To have the same texture as your sill you could add a small piece of floor (by Picking Points) or use the Custom Member from Interior Accesories / Decorative.
I assume your addition is on a second location? This may explain the missing overhang on the roof as one roof will cut off the other. Select the roof that is being clipped and change the Solution Type.
The gable end on your image looks like two textures in the same space. Maybe you have the wall extending to the roof and also have the Display Gable of the roof ticked so both are trying to show, or you have the same wall on both locations with a different texture on that side of the wall.

Thanks for the explanation of the door sill. I will use one of the options that you gave me to correct that.
On the gable wall and roof the additions are not on a different location. They are all on the 2nd floor. I created the roof for the main house first and the gable ends looked fine, but when I added the roof to the additions is when I get the gaps in the display. The additions use the existing gable end wall of the main house. It also took the exterior wall from the main house and broke it inot 3 pieces aligned with the jog in the wall for the addition. It looks like the center piece may be associated with the addition rather than the main house roof.
I had gone back and deleted the roofs and the 2nd floor walls and receated the main house 2nd floor wals first and then added the main house roof, but when I added the addition walls and roofs it split the 2nd floor walls.
Is there a better way to create this?
I also wanted to change the trim width on the gable end and now it will not let me change that. I have a hole in my gable trim into the overhang over the soffit that could be addressed by the wider trim plus it would bringthe main house trim down to the roof of the addition. See attachment.
Thanks.

Hi Grant,
It is a bit hard trying to diagnose some of these things without seeing the actual model, but it is obvious that two walls or something are interacting with each other in the same space. Often it is easier and better to put an addition on a second location, especially if you want to use the Materials List.
If a second location was used you would just use the room divide tool for the 'connecting wall' on the addition part and the roofs would be totally independant.
Why not post the BLD file here or email it to me if you prefer (alches AT iinet.net.au) and I will have a look to see what is happening.

Here is the bld file.
Thanks for taking the time to look at the file.

Hi Grant,
The main problem I think is that the fascias and roof thickness are not all the same - the centre gable edges are different. The easiest way to fix it is to delete the roof, set a new one to the correct thinkness and Fascia depth that you want (10"?) and then insert it again. Then, following the image below, change all the arrows that are green to Gable.
If the fascia on the higher roof still leaves some of the gable visible, you need to change the inside wall that is extending in to the gable, so that the side that is 'outside' is forced to be Exterior by ticking the appropriate box on the wall properties Basic tab. Left or right is determined by the direction the wall was drawn (from the green marker to the red one). This will make this piece of wall show the siding rather than the interior surface. Alternatively you may get away with it by ticking the Display Gable option and set the texture to the same as the wall. You may also have to turn off the AutoExtend and reduce the wall height so you do not have two textures conflicing in the same space.
Probably this central higher section should be on its own location because you will probably have problems near these corners that stick out where the lower roof section's walls join into the higher wall's gables - they will likely create a gap in the gable. If the centre section was made into a new location at the same height as the Second floor but with a higher wall height (eg 1') then this issue, if it shows, would be avoided.
Hope you followed all that.

Allan,
Thanks for taking the time to look at my file. I think that I followed you and will try your suggestions this weekend nd let you know how it works out.
Again thanks for helping.
