I am designing a single story extension but with the a room in the loft space. The roof will be of a gable end design. It is intended that the first floor will be of stone but the rest, from first floor to roof apex (the gable end) being timber clad. How can this be displayed?
Hi Terry,
The different texture on a gable for the Ground Floor is simple, just fix the wall height (turn off AutoExtend) and on the Roof's Gable properties tick the box Display Gable. On the Appearance tab you can set the gable texture to timber or whatever you want. However if you have a loft or attic the loft walls can provide the different texture.
A couple of simple steps first to get a loft or attic space to work easily (in case you are not aware of them):
1. Go to Building Locations and for your Second Floor (Loft or Attic - change the name if you want) set the wall height to whatever the VERTICAL part of the wall is (eg 600mm or 2') or if the wall slopes right to the floor set it to 1mm or 1". While you are in Building Locations - If you are going to insert a sloping ceiling then set the ceiling height to the same VERTICAL height as the walls, so it can also slope up from that point (or you can just use the Underside of the roof as the ceiling),
2. Make sure the wall you use to draw the loft walls is set to AutoExtend. That way any wall that cross the loft space will extend to the roof and you can insert doors and windows into them. Yes you still have to draw these walls even if they are so tiny you cant see them - the roof will sit on these tiny walls.
3. Insert the roof on the Loft/attic location. As soon as you do, your tiny walls will extend to the roof, giving your your upstairs living space.
4. As mentioned in 1 above, if the ceiling follows the roof all the way then you can use the underside of the roof as the ceiling but if you want to insert a ceiling just set it to Cathedral and adjust the slope to the same as the roof.
If you set the Exterior wall Appearance for your mini loft / attic walls to the timber you want on the Gable, then, when these tiny walls extend into the gable, you will have your timber gable texture. Leave the Ground Floor walls to AutoExtend and they will still give the stone you want there.
