Title: Display of black line from dormer
Post by: Abhann on February 01, 2013, 09:05:48 AM
When you use the automatic dormer it adds something that looks kind of like a room divider line for the walls.  How do you stop this line from displaying in 3D? It disappears when rendering a static view, but is visible in an unrendered animation. I'm experimenting with animations but wasn't planning to bother rendering them.

Hi Abhann,

Not sure what you mean by an unrendered animation. It is a while since I use the animation tools, but I cannot think of a way to do an animation that is not rendered. Or do you mean it is showing in Basic render but not in Advanced render?

Hi Abhann,

The 'back' of a dormer has no walls, so in order to 'close' the space, the program uses a Room Division line to complete the enclosure. If you delete that line (turn off Roof in View Filter > select and delete line), then you will not have an enclosed space and the walls will become 'interior walls' without siding.

I normally just leave it as is because it doesn't affect a rendering. I do delete that associated floor that is generated.

Deleting for Render Preview should be no problem, just check any textures on walls at dormer.

Thanks to both of you!

Allan: Sorry, I should have said rendered without using 3D view, kind of like the Basic version of an animation versus the higher quality advanced version.

Jack: Thanks, I knew I didn't want to delete the line but couldn't remember why  :)

Problem fixed, I can delete the line while doing the animation and either replace it after or re-texture the exterior walls.

Hi Abhann,

I have not played with dorners as they are rarely seen in Australia, but if the Room Divide line is only keeping the 'room' complete in order to display the exterior texture, can't you just select the dormer walls and tick the Wall Properties boxes that force that side of the wall to be Exterior?

Thanks Allan, should have thought of that one myself!

For my current project that will help, but on an incomplete project deleting the room divide line for the dormer can stop the room from being properly enclosed (for floors and things) if the dormer walls are doubling as room walls.  Lots of dormers around here, only two basic styled ones on my house but the neighbors' roof has lots (about 4?) in different styles.

If for any reason you do not have a complete room, you can still add floors/celings/roofs "by picking points"; no room divider req'd.
