Title: Catalog Window Preview Missing
Post by: fiedler57 on May 17, 2013, 09:22:37 PM
I am having problems with my new installation of version 16.
After un-installing version 15 and installing version 16, I do not see the 'catalog element preview image' that is usually displayed below the catalog list of elements.
I have tried numerous things that I found on a string of post dated back in 2010 such as:
1. un-checked and re-checked the 'Info Panel' box in the Settings-Program Settings-Workspace field
2. checked for updates to my video card driver (already had the most current drivers installed)
3. unchecked the 'Hardware Acceleration' box in the Settings-Program Settings-Graphics-Video Card field
4. uninstalled and reinstalled the program numerous times.
None of these has worked.
I do get a few flickers of the image when I first start the programs but it disappears as fast as it appeared.
It reverts to an all white area without the framed box preview area that is usually below the Catalog List window.
Any other ideas on what may work to fix this problem???    Thanks in advance!!!

Computer is a:
HP Pavilion dv7
Windows 7 Home Edition - Service Pack 1
Intel Core i7 3610QM CPU 2.3GHz
8GB RAM
NAVIDA GeForce GT650M 2GB Video Card

I have not had this problem so you can try this but it may not help:

Do you see the text list of catalog items?
Try looking at program setting to be sure it knows where to look for the catalog.  Go there and see if the catalog file is there and it is large like near 30mb.

Close any/all .bld files, open a new .bld file and build a one room house, then try the catalog.

try changing to/from metric vs. imperial (maybe a catalog is bad?)

Open a sample .bld file from IMSI (came with TFP) and look into the catalog with that file.

All above to see if catalog files work and are OK and TFP knows how to find.

Your PC system looks like it should be OK for TFP.

It seems you have tried all the usual things. The issue sounds to me like a PC issue somehow, yet as Doug said, the specs seem fine.  I presume the V15 catalogue image displayed OK? Do you have the necessary file to reinstall V15 again? If so, try installing it again, check that the image display correctly and then install V16 again. (Incidentally you do not have to uninstall previous versions - both can be on the PC together - it does not matter, except that you can only run one at once).
I make the suggestion to reinstall V15 also because I wondered if uninstalling V15 may have deleated a 'dll' or some other file, that did not get replaced by V16. It would be most odd for this to happen but it seems you have tried everything else, so it won't hurt to try it.

Something else: You said that you have tried it with Hardware Acceleration off (which I would have expected would fix it). Maybe you could also try 'turning down' the acceleration of the video driver itself. Not desirable and should not be needed, but maybe worth a try.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your suggestions!
I tried all but adjusting the graphics card itself with no such luck.
I have found out that I have two graphics cards in my notebook computer, the NVIDA as mentioned earlier and a Intel HD Graphics 4000.
I am not sure why I have both, when I ordered my notebook, I upgraded from the standard onboard Intel HD Graphics 4000 to the NVIDA.
I see that when the Hardware Acceleration box is checked, it shows the 'Intel HD Graphics 4000' is listed, not the NVIDA. When un-checked it shows 'GDI Generic Microsoft Corporation'.
Strange thing is, when the program first starts up, the element preview image flickers a little and then disappears and all I see is white.  It again flickers when I close the start/intro screen. The catalog item list is visible all the time though.
I uninstalled version 16 and re-installed version 15 hoping that would correct the problem and now that install does the same thing.
I am soooooo confused?!?!?

I am not a computer wiz at all so I will leave any technical discussion on this to Pat or others, but it sounds to me as though your PC is using the integrated graphics card (which can result in your current problem) rather than the Nvidia card. I have no idea how to force it to use the correct card, but suspect that is the problem and hopefully someone can confirm it and let you know how to fix it.

What happens when you switch catalogs ?

Go to File / Catalogs and then click on catalogs so pop up gives you choice of Imperial or Metric. Switch to new catalog and note what happens.

------------------

What happens when you drag the preview (catalog) window to the left (larger).  Place cursor over division line, when it turns to double arrows, hold left mouse key down, drag window to left (larger).

I agree with Allan, sounds like the Nvidia card is being bypassed for this program.  May be best to try other programs and confirm that the Nvidia card is being used at all?
Probably best place is to contact the manufacturer or its users forum for tests to run and settings to make. Laptops are often setup this way and often both video components work together for different things...if the drivers are correct.

UPDATE:

After a long day yesterday on the phone with HP , they decided that it would be best to re-install my operating system after backing up my files, not the best option, but an option that worked!!!
I now can see the catalog preview window in versions 15 and 16...
Thank you all for your support and reccomendations.

Hi Jim,

I can imagine your concern about reinstalling the OS but it worked so was worth it!  :D

Thanks for letting us know the outcome and great to hear you got it sorted out.

Hi Allan,
After the OS re-install and another call to Microsoft to get my pre-loaded Office 2010 re-installed.  I turns out to not be the problem...  I again received the same lost of the preview again.  I did a re-store back a couple of days to see if I could get it back and yes it re-appeared, then I made some personal display changes (as I done before) and again I lost it.  I tried back and forth with the changes and have found that if I change my display setting for 'text and other items' on the screen from the default 125% Medium Setting to 150% Large Setting is when I would lose the preview window.  I never thought that this would be the culprit but that seems to be the issue.  Now I still have a bunch or re-installs to do and hope that this issue is corrected.  I will leave the setting at 125% and get some reading glasses instead (would have been much cheaper and time saving!!!).
Have a great weekend!
Jim

Hi Jim,

Obviously your computer/OS is different to mine. Mine was set to 100%. I changed it to 125% and everything was still OK but bigger of course. When I changed to 150% the Display window would not even fit on the screen - only the catalogue list showed and the window was off the bottom and not visible at all. Because all the toolbars etc were enlarged also the plan size was way too small to work on, so the setting would be totally impractical for my computer.

Reading glasses sound like a good idea!  ;)
