Okay, there must be a way to put counter tops on things other than cabinets, say on top of a pony wall or similar to serve as a bar top elbow support. And I find that in properties for a cabinet you can choose the counter top and loose the cabinet altogether . . . top1
and they give you a number of adjustments for the Counter top, you can customize it effectively . . . top2
Plus settings for elevation so you can get it right up on top of that little wall . . . top3
Soo I click the okay button and pffft, there is the counter top almost untouched . . .
it did save the elevation, it's at the right height, and it saves it's new name, but it continually defaults to the same old settings . . . top5
What am I doing wrong?
I have not done this but use TFP a lot. I'd suggest:
Be sure to close each choice by first hit tab to get off the current item change and click on OK (do not use return key) to close the dialog box
Also sometimes better to change only one thing at a time, OK to save change, then open properties again to change one more thing...and verify each change as you ask it to happen.
It "should" work to change everything desired at one time and then close/OK and most things work that way, BUT just in case, do it slow, one step at a time.

I notice that you are using V15. If I recall correctly, the Counter Top was 'broken' in V15. Have you applied the V15 patches? I think the last one fixed it but my memory is sketchy so I may be wrong. It is OK in V16.
You can easily make a counter top that can be any shape, using the Floor tool. Easiest to draw it "by Picking Points" outside the house. Just draw the shape and size you want, set the thickness and textures, curve any edges you want (right click - Curve), then right click and Elevate it to the height you want and drag it inside to where you want it. This is more flexible than the Counter top anyway, so the counter bug is not really a major issue.
