Title: grass walls in basement
Post by: JBme on June 29, 2013, 05:12:01 PM
I've built a house, and noticed that if I go underground, the walls above ground have grass-green  continuations underground. They
are not set to extend underground, so I'm not sure why there are green counterparts underground for each wall.
But now I am trying to add a room in the foundation level of the house, and the room has created fine, but the green walls below the ground floor walls
cut in to my foundation-level room. I can't select them or delete them below ground.
Firstly, how do I stop it from mirroring every wall with an underground counterpart, and secondly, how do I remove the underground
grass walls it has put there?

Thanks,
JBme

I am not quite clear as to what is showing . . . but suspect in your program settings the box is not checked to prevent terrain from intruding into house plan.....see attached image.

Suggest you post an image to help explain what you see as wrong.

This sounds most unusual and as Doug said we will at least need an image to try to imagine what has happened. Normally the only way you would get a replication undwrground would be if you have selected all the ground floor walls and duplicated them to the Foundation location, but even that would not make them green!

It might even be better to post the BLD file so we can see exactly what is happening or email it to me if you prefer.(alches AT iinet DOT net DOT au)

Doug and Allan,

Thanks for your replies. Attached is an image of part of the building, with the view shown from a long way underground, looking back up towards the surface where the ground and first floor building sits. You will see the building on the ground level, but every wall continues in grass for a long way below the ground. Therefore any basement rooms I try to add that overlap those grass "walls" have the walls embedded in the room.

The building sits on top of a large hill, and from above ground, the terrain slopes away from the house as expected.

Yes my setting are set to prevent the terrain coming in to the ground floor build as Doug shows.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
JBme

JB.

When you set the terrain option using Ground Floor to cut terrain, a void is created under any enclosed space that you define on the Ground Floor. I can see why you want this as you state the terrain slopes and you don't want grass in your living room.

It appears that you then want to add a basement but it doesn't 'match' the cut created by the ground floor, so you have some areas in the foundation with grass inside. You cannot now tell the program to use the Foundation level to cut as Ground floor is already needed.

So one way to do this is use the Pad tool in the Terrain options and uncheck 'Hug Terrain'.  It will now fall to bottom of the Terrain and cut a hole independent of the Ground floor. You will have to add your Foundations walls / floors on top of this cut.

Ground level will make it's needed cut in the Terrain, the Pad will make one for foundation as needed.

Thanks for that, that worked.

But now I have a related problem....
I was in 2D view and I put in a wall inside an existing room and saved,  then put in a couple more walls in the same room, then I went
to 3D view to discover that a giant (4 times the height of my double-storey house) green grassy hill has suddenly appeared in the middle of my house.
So only the outer wall of my house now poke through where the hill subsides. As I hit "undo" to delete each of the walls, chunks of the hill disappear,
revealling more of my house. Unfortunately I saved after the first wall I put in, so I can't undo part of the giant hill it put in.

Firstly why the heck is it doing that - I've never seen this before, and
secondly, how do I get rid of the hill. Even deleting the offending wall got rid of the wall but wont change the hill. So creating the wall
fundamentally changed the terrain in a way that I cannot work out.

Any help please????? At the moment most of my house is totally buried.
I could set slabs under all my house to artificially get the hill out, but I had previously set perfect terrain sloping away from the house, and
that would bugger up all of that. I just need to understand why this program does strange grass structures below or above ground associated with every wall.

Totally confused!!

Hi JBme,

I have not seen, norcan I imagine, how a wall can create a hill, as they are not related objects. The hill is part of the Terrain location while the walls are not.

However the Terrain is always editable on any level if you have it set that way. In other words, you may have accidentally adjusted the sloping terrain that you had while moving or inserting, the walls. What you need to do now is select the hill (easiest in 3D view) and delete it. If you have accidentally created the hill by adjusting the slope settings, then you may have to redo the slope. What you should do, after setting a Terrain slope etc is to go to the View Filter and make the Terrain not selectabe, so you cannot accidentally alter it.

Without seeing the actual model I am just guessing what has happened of course. If you would like to post the model here or email it to me ( alches AT iinet DOT net DOT au) I will have a look at it for you, in case there is some other cause, althoigh I can't think of anything else.

Thanks Allan.
I know that the hill structures are part of the walls I was putting in not accidental edits of the landscape, because
1. As I deleted each wall while in 3D view, the hills each disappeared simultaneously with the wall that created them, so they were "part" of the wall, and
2. The remaining hill connected to the wall I can't delete (since I had saved) is not selectable. If I click on the terrain, I can still select
the original terrain features I put in and they still have the original specs, but they are perched on top of this huge house-engulfing hill. Even deleting
the terrain I want to be there only reduces the slightest little bit off the top of the giant mountain that I can't select in any way. If I click on the mountain in a place where there is not an original terrain feature, it simply selected some wall that is buried below the mountain.

Every wall I create seems to create an attached "green" part, which up until now has been green grassy walls underground - even for internal walls.
This only happens on the ground floor, and I'm convinced I have some setting wrong.
I'm looking through the settings but can't find anything yet, but I don't know enough about a lot of the settings, so I'm investigating.

The fact that you haven't seen this before suggests that I have had a setting wrong all along, that you have always set properly, but I have missed.

Hi JB,

This does not make sense (walls creating hills I mean).
I would like to see what is happening here but obviously need to see the BLD file as it is impossible to tell otherwise. If you would like to send it to me I will see if I can sort it out for you.

Hi Allan,

What I have done for now is to artificially raise the level of each floor, so the whole build is sitting on the hill, as I can't select and delete the hill.
Now as I try and put in the walls that caused the problem I will save at each step, so it should become clear what the cause is if it happens again.
I will let you know if I work it out. It is most likely all just due to me doing something stupid as I'm a novice at this. If the problem repeats each time then I'll send
you the build file, but at the moment it seems random - I can put in some walls without problem then the next wall will make it all go crazy.

OK. Let me know what you find as this is not something I have seen before and I am curious to know what is happening.
