Title: Photoboard import color issue
Post by: marv_f on July 25, 2013, 05:27:41 PM
When I import a photoboard (BMP or JPEG) the photo appears as though it is being viewed through dark glasses. A pure white will show as grey. In all other applications the photo is correctly displayed. If the same photo is brought in as a texture and applied to an object it appears correctly. It seems that any texture or photo applied to a photoboard darkens as compared to a 3D object.

The attached photo shows a picture mapped on a 3D object (Left Image) and the same picture mapped on a photoboard (Right Image). Note the how dark the photoboard presents.

Is this normal for TFP 15.1?  Is there something I'm missing?

Thanks . . .

Hi and welcome to the forum,

I don't think you are necessarily doing anything wrong, as I have see that happen before, but photoboarda are intended to be used to represent very complex 3D objects such as trees, animals and people, that are 'freestanding', odd shapes, and able to automatically rotate so that they always face the camera.

In your case you are using it for a flat, rectangular shape, at a fixed angle. Normally flat objects like a picture on the wall, walpaper or any other texture, would simply be applied to a surface as you have done with the image on the left.

Is there some reason why you wanted to use a photoboard in this particular instance?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.
In laying out a room I wanted to replicate a specific piece of furniture. I copied a photo of the furniture from the web and used it as a photoboard placed on the front surface of a similarly shaped 3ds object. Since the 3ds object was not one flat surface I couldn't use the imported photo as a mapped texture.  Any hints . . . ?

Thanks again!

You cannot use a photoboard on something, they are freestanding. If you want to use a photo of a specific piece of furniture, you would have to use a pboto editing program and cut around the object, delete the cut off part of the image and fill the surrounding  space with Magenta colour (Red 255, Green 0 Blue 255). This leaves just your photo of the furniture surrounded by Magenta (bright pink) which will become transparent in the program. It must be saved as a BMP image not JPG.

It you have a similarly shaped 3D object then you can just use a texture from a photo (eg fabric on a lounge suite) and it will automatically spread all over the shape.

I understand that they are free standing. I was placing it in front of the object to try an get some idea of what it would look like. My current plan is to either find a 3ds object with a flat fron surface or construct a box like 3D object and use the photo as a texture.

Thanks for your input  :)

You could make the shape yourself by cutting out a piece of Floor (by Picking Points), you can round any edges you need to and then Export it as a 3DS file (turning off the terrain before the export). You can the import it again and, when you do, you can turn it 90 degrees and apply the photo on what was originally the floor surface.
