I have just recently bought TFP v17, and I've found the symbol library a bit thin on choices for different items when furnishing inside a home.
I have Cad symbols v7 which I bought with TurboCad Pro v20 upgrade last year, which has a greater choice in the library options. So is it compatible with TFP v17 ?

Welcome to the forum! :)
V17 is a totally different program to V16 and previous versions, being based on a Punch program rather than on Cadsoft's Envisioneer. Sadly the two programs are totally incompatible.
The CAD symbols you previously bought are still compatible with V16's "successor" now called Personal Architect and sold directly by Cadsoft at http://www.personalarch.com/ (http://www.personalarch.com/). If you have projects or objects created in V16 or earlier versions, Personal Architect will still open and edit them.

Do you mean symbols (2D) or furniture (3D)?
3D objects: you can import Sketchup objects (File => Import => Sketchup file) or you can build your own furniture using the 3D Workshop Power Tool. Cabinets can be created with the Cabinet Tool
2D symbols: you can import your CAD symbols or any other DXF or DWG file using File => Import => DXF / DWG file

Patricia has raised a good question that did not occur to me before - did you mean 2D or 3D symbols?
I assumed in my earlier reply, (from the fact that you had posted in the V12-V16 section of the forum and that you already had the TurboCAD symbols), that you owned one of these earlier versions, as they were often bundled with TurboCAD. As I recall these symbols were in 3D DXF and 3DS format, as well as 2D DXF and DWG. As Patricia pointed out, V17 will accept the 2D symbols but I assume it will not import the 3D versions: 3D DXF and 3DS (correct me if I am wrong Patricia), but will import SKP.
If you are talking about 3D symbols, then I think the later versions of TurboCAD will export as SKP, so this may be an avenue for you to use them: open them in TurboCAD and export them as SKP - then you can import them into V17. Incidentally, SketchUp is also an excellent source of additional furniture, although these cannot be edited after import, even as the TurboCAD symbols cannot be either (except for total size and textures of course).
If you are only talking about 2D symbols, then V17 (and previous versions), can import them.

Allan: yes, TFP V17 imports 3DS files (File => Import => 3DS files)
So, regarding the 2D / 3D Import capabilities of TFP V17, these are the capabilities
Import 2D => DXF / DWG
Import 3D => 3DS, SKP.
3D objects can be created within the program using the 3D Workshop Power Tool
2D symbols can be created within the program using the lines and shapes in the Detail tab

The "Cad symbols v7" mentioned in the first post is a forerunner of the current "Cad symbols v8 (http://www.turbocad.com/TurboCAD/TurboCAD-Windows/Symbols/CAD-Symbols-v8)" program. It supposedly has a mixture of 2D & 3D symbols in a variety of formats.
