Hi Allan and community,

I've been using TurboFloorPlan Pro 2015 for some time now and I'm having problems with inconsistent dimensions. I have problems with elevations that don't sum up, but first I want to show you the most basic problem I have found; dimensions of a room generated with the autodimension feature (the ones that display after putting a check on Tool Options at the right side of the screen) for rooms do not match the dimensions generated by the Dimension Wall Spacing tool.

Here I show an example of a room which is measured as 7.35x6.55 m with the Wall Spacing Tool and as 7.34x6.53 m with the autodimension feature. I have a 0.01 m snap to grid active to try to avoid any rounding errors (which wouldn't account for the discrepancy anyway). I attach an image showing  the issue.

It would seem that a small area at the door zone is excluded from the orange area of first image and this would explain the discrepancy, but I also show a complete closed room in the second image that suffers from a similar discrepancy.

Hi Patricia,

Thank you very much for your kind answer. I now respond to your instructions:

1. The walls are perfectly fused. I even created a new room from scratch, both before and after restarting the program, but the problem persisted in the new room.
2. The wall spacing tool is set to surfaces.
3. Only one setting was non-complaint with your advice; the third one, "open existing drawings using new plan defaults", was unchecked, so I checked it, saved and restarted the program. This setting is stubborn and returns to unchecked when restarting the program. However I rechecked it before opening the file, to no avail.

Could there be any other problem? Would you like to check a sample TFP file with this problem?

Patricia,

I see your point. New rooms added this way preserve their correct dimensions. However, I would like to note the following:

1. When resized slightly, the dimensions of the two systems can vary by up to one centimeter due to slight imprecisions.
2. When the room is more complex, as in the attached files in which I have drawn a structure with different wall lenghts and thicknesses, the problem is there and cannot be solved by just micro-adjusting the spacing.

So, what do you think?

Thanks again for discussing this. I really think that this is a great program that just needs a little polishing.

Patricia,

Of course I'm willing to practice and learn more about the program, but the software has to be consistent.

1. I use 1 cm precision in the grid because that is the minimum allowed. If I put in a smaller measure, the TFP increases it to 1 cm. You can use 1.1 cm, but not 0.9 cm for example.
2. I previously deactivated the snap to grid feature, but the results were worse. I want anything to be rounded to cm so I can forget about mm, or even smaller increments.
3. In fact if you increase the precision of the display, the two systems differ even more clearly.

I know the command for moving an object, but it is not required in this case; I'm just creating a room with 4 walls.

In the file I sent to you, I see no way to align the room with different wall sizes (the one to the right of the room you drew) so that both systems agree in their measurements. If you can do this, please edit the file with the room I sent you as an example and make it display the correct numbers, and then I will agree. I'd rather find out that the program is working correctly than being right on this one.

On the other side, I've tried everything you have suggested and I see no way of putting this in order. Can't there be a possibilty of some bugs in the program?

I insist that I am willing to learn but a well defined problem must have a well defined answer that does not depend on the inquirer being an expert or not.

Hi there Patricia,

There is no need to feel offended. I know you are the teacher here, with background on several Architecture and Engineering subjects and software and even author of books.  Perhaps it sounds as if I want to win the point, but this is not so. As you know, even the best of complex software has bugs, and TFP is no exception.

If this were a Math class, I would just be the pupil presenting the teacher with an equation. Even if I am not as knowledgeable, if you solve the equation I can study the solution. That's what I do when I am teaching something; I solve the problem and explain the solution. And if it is the case that the software has something wrong here, it would be best to note it and report it to the developers.
