Title: Transparency and Materials/Textures
Post by: RandyJ on March 12, 2015, 08:43:30 AM
Hi Patricia and Everybody, Well I have been working with textures. I wanted a custom clock, this is what I came up with. I created 3D circle in 3d Workshop...then made texture of clock with a black background. I imported it and set the texture black to transparency and texture to stretch. I then wanted one garage door opened. So imported a pure black texture. set transparency and stretch. Applied to door. Got a open door! Cool! The 4305 sign I did in the same way...the beer glasses and pitcher were created in a different 3D program and imported. I then painted them in 3D Workshop and set transparency to about 50%...As you say Patricia practice, practice!!! Any suggestions?

Hi Randy,

The image looks good!  :)

Since you are asking for suggestions, these are some notes, tips & tricks:

- Important: you wrote "the beer glasses and pitcher were created in a different 3D program and imported. I then painted them in 3D Workshop and set transparency to about 50%" => for other TFP users reading this post, I think that it is important to clarify this point: unless you imported a *.POB object (this is the format for objects developed with the 3D Custom Workshop Power Tool), it is not possible to modify the imported objects using the 3D Workshop Power Tool and keep them in their original format.
In other words, the 3D Custom Workshop Power Tool modifies and keeps the format and properties only with the 3D Custom Workshop Power Tool (POB) objects. 3DS objects can be imported but not modified. SKP objects can be imported and modified if they are converted to the 3D Custom Workshop Power Tool format (POB)

- Garage Door - Visual Trick 1: in order to "open" the garage door by removing the door, you can replace the garage door with an empty casement. In the image number 1 you can see 3 identical garage doors. I painted the trims with green color and the overhead door with red. In the image number 2, I selected the second door => in the Tool Options bar (right pane), I replaced the Garage door with an empty casement. As you can see in the image number 2, the door disappeared and you can see only the green trim.

- Garage Door - Visual Trick 2: if you wish to play with transparent surfaces => go to the Materials library => Custom Materials => Punch Bonus Materials => Miscellaneous => the 8th material is a Transparent Black texture => by applying this texture on a surface, it becomes transparent. In the image # 3, I applied this texture on the trim (empty casement), creating an opening in the wall. You can use this procedure to create niches or arches (with curved casements). The advantage of this texture is the fact that, as it is part of the program, it will remain in the file, even if you change your computer.

Hope this helps

Patricia

Hi Patricia, I figured there would be a transparent material I just could not find it. Thanks for the pointers. as usual great advice!!!! But I did import the beer glass and pitcher and did edit in 3D Custom Workshop. I am posting picture of a 3DS imported sphere which i painted in 3D Custom Workshop and set translucency to 70%. I can resize and modify the imported 3ds file I just double click on it and it goes into 3D Custom Workshop. I will also attach the 3DS sphere file

Hi Randy,

I edited my post to avoid misunderstandings  ;)
This is what I meant: when you import and edit a 3DS file using the 3DCW, although you save it as POB it won't be a pure POB, and you can't set the 3DS properties, therefore, you won't get all the features and you will increase the polygon count. This is why it is not possible create a pure POB starting with a 3DS file.
In the image attached, you can see the difference with two tables
But of course, you can use the resource  :)

Hi Patricia, Ok I see. As per usual very informative Patricia. They have a great advocate in you. Every answer you have is precise and easy to understand. The program itself is also very good.  :)
