Title: Importing Objects
Post by: R Roddy on March 29, 2015, 12:12:15 PM
Hi,

Can anybody tell me a file format for objects that TFPv17 will import?  I have created objects using a couple of different other programs, and every format is grayed out on "Import", including .obj and .3ds.

Thanks,
Ray Roddy

Hi Ray Roddy,

In your previous posts you stated that you were running V 17.5 on a Mac so, please clarify if you are asking regarding V17 or 17.5, Win or Mac
A screenshot would be useful

Hi,

I'm running 17.5 on a Mac.  The way you pose the question implies the feature works on other versions.  Is this the case?

I asked about the program because you wrote "version 17" so, I imagined that perhaps you were using two different computers / OS / programs / versions.
Yes, the Mac and Windows programs have different features

Can you show me this situation with a screenshot?

Hi,

This is "file > import > Punch! 3D object ..."  selection dialog.  Note that all the objects are grayed, including .3ds, .obj, and .wrl.  If you know of a program that will do conversions, that would probably be satisfactory.

Thanks,

Ray

Hi there,

Let's clarify some concepts:
- If you try to import a file to any program (Word, Paint, Turbocad, TFP, etc) the screen will show as "available" only the files that can be imported. This doesn't mean that there is a problem with the program. So, if you are using MSWord, for example, you won't be able to import a DWG file because this is not a MSWord feature.
- The TFP for Mac programs import only Punch 3D Objects (POB format). This is a proprietary format for objects developed or saved with the 3D Custom Workshop Power Tool (not included with the TFP for Mac programs)
- If you have a folder with POBs, and you use File => Import => Punch 3D objects, you will notice that these files are active and you can import them without problems (see image attached)
- The TFP for Windows programs import 3DS and Sketchup files. In addition, these programs import POBs and include the 3D Workshop Power Tool.

As a test, unzip the second file (corner cabinet.zip) and try to import the corner cabinet POB file

I know that your next question will be: websites with free or paid POBs? Answer: there are not websites offering POBs.

Hope this helps

Hi,

Sorry.  I was misled by the manual:  "You can import a variety of file types into TurboFloorPlan from other popular software....", p 61, TurboFloorPlan User's Guide.

Simply saying that only Punch objects can actually be imported would have answered the question.

Thanks,
Ray

So you are saying that I gave you too much information?  ???

I think about the Forums as a database with information about a program in this case. So, it is ready and available when any user wants to learn the program.
