Title: Varying the wall thickness of a continuous wall
Post by: TGYoung on July 22, 2015, 05:07:29 PM
My living room has what looks to be a continuous wall from North to South separating the living room from the kitchen/dining room area.  However if you step through the opening in this wall, to the left of the fireplace, and look at this wall you notice that the Northernmost section of the wall, (115" or so),  is quite thick - the opening you've just walked through is a short "hallway" 27" long.  This section of the wall houses the fireplace.  Then there's a short 23" wall heading West that meets the normally sized living room wall.  The attached picture drawn with a different program gives you the idea.

I initially drew the North - South wall at 27" thick and extended it all the way to the South to the exterior wall.  I then broke the wall at the appropriate point and tried to change the wall thickness of the Southernmost section to 4", but the change extends itself past the "break" and makes the entire wall 4" thick.  I would have thought that breaking the wall would have made it independent of the 27" wall, but I guess that's not the case.

I drew the wall this way in order to keep the face of the wall facing the living room a continuous surface.  Initially I drew just the appropriate length of the 27" thick wall and tried to tack a 4" wall onto its Southern end, but I wasn't able to make the West face a continuous flat surface.  I always had a little "jag" where the two walls meet.

What's the right way to do this?

Hi there,

Different wall thickness - two concepts :
- if you have two walls and you join them using the arrows of your keyboard, you are connecting the walls--> this means that the walls are together but they are independent--> they don't share the properties or thickness and work as 2 separated walls.
- if you have two walls and you join them using the mouse, you are merging the walls--> this means that the walls are fused --> they share the properties (and thickness) and they work as only one wall.

I did read that in one of your other posts, though I don't think the manual mentions that distinction.  So what does "break" do?  I drew the wall using the mouse and then "broke" it.  You would think that would make the now 2 walls independent.  Other than deleting a section of a wall - if you make 2 break points - what does "breaking do, from a program standpoint?

Lots of things: you can use different materials or paint colors, different building materials, different wall shapes or trims or heights, elevations, etc.

P.S.Glad to know that you read my previous posts!  ;)

Thanks for that.

It just seems odd to me that you have so many attributes different between two parts of a broken wall but not width.

As a practical matter I know I don't have a 27" wall, I have 2 walls with faces 27" apart, but yet the pathway through these two walls is an open "doorway" 27" long and it seemed simpler to construct a wall 27" thick and drop an open path into that "wall".   I probably need to go back and take that approach though I'm not sure at this point how I'll put a "ceiling" on that doorway.

You're welcome.
You can set the wall with thickness= 27"

Yes, I understand that.  The first picture shows the wall at 27" clear across the living room.  It was the attempt to have that wall be 4" think at some point that led me to try "break" and changing the "broken" portion to 4", then to try entering two breaks, deleting that portion and then simply adding a 4" wall.  Neither approach has really worked.

I was thinking of deleting the entire wall, drawing a 4" thick wall clear across the the living room, drawing a 4" thick wall of the appropriate length in the kitchen/dining area 27" away from the living room wall, then drawing a 4" thick wall from the kitchen/dining room wall back to the living room wall, enclosing the fireplace.   The issue is how I draw the opening between the living room and the kitchen/dining area.  I guess I would place an open doorway on both the living room wall and the kitchen/dining room wall, draw a new wall framing the the two openings on the fireplace side, and then somehow "drop" the ceiling in this passage way?

I'll have to thrash around a bit.

What if you set a wall segment with thickness = 27" and add an empty casement with the correct height?

If by "empty casement" you are speaking to the first "Door Style" that comes up when you select the door tool, that's what I did with my first attempt as shown in the "Where is the "selection" leaking through these walls?" post.  The problem with that was the inability to re-set the wall size for the rest of the wall to 4" thick without going back and affecting the 27" thick section.  And attempting to "tack" a 4" thick wall for some reason wasn't sealing up the wall, it appeared.

I went back and created two 4" thick walls set at the proper distance, put that first door style at the same place on both walls and put up another wall connecting the two openings with a ceiling height that was the same as the height of the door openings.  That fixed the "select" leakage and seemed to look OK on the 3D walkthrough.

Glad to know that the problem is fixed!  :)
