What is the best way to create a gable roof with eaves? When I use the 4 point freehand tool I can't get a the two side to meet in the middle.

there are several options
1 - Using 4 point freehand tool => you can create the two segments and adjust the dimensions so both sides meet in the center
2 - In the Roof tab, the first icon is the "ready to use" roof => click on the triangle on the right => the drop down menu will open => the first tool is a gable roof => you can create the eaves using the floor tool (Floor tab) => set the thickness as 1"=> set the elevation to fit the roof.
3 - Use the Auto Roof tool => the tool will create a hip roof => delete the side pieces => move the center points to create the gable. In the image attached =>remove the hip (already removed on the right) => move the point outlined in green to the position outlined in blue.
