Title: Placng Ceramic Tile on Part of a Wall
Post by: ahr8tch on January 26, 2008, 01:49:05 AM
How would you do this?  I can't figure out how to make a texture stop at a certain point on a wall's height or width.

I modified an interior wall and saved it as "tile". It is 1/4" thick and the top is set for level @ 4'. All trim deleted. Place this wall up against a regular wall and it looks real good.

Tiles on the wall would normally be applied using the Wainscot settings on the wall Properties.  The image below is proably the easiest way to see how to do it.  If you do not need the baseboard, then it can be turned into a Wainscot. If the tiles do not go the full length of the wall then right click it and select Break and click the wall where you want the tiles to stop. Then select that part of the wall and delete the wainscot.

Hope you can follow all that.

Thanks guys,

I'll play around with the wainscoting thing and see what I can accomplish.  Right now I'm battling to get glass shower walls to sit on a 5" base wall without any baseboard or other trim and at the right height.

Any suggestions for finding brass or chrome edge trim to put in place of the baseboard trim on glass shower walls?

Thanks again for all your help.

You will find Silver, Copper, Gold and Chrome under Materials / Finishes.  Bear in mind to that you can add new baseboards at the thickness/depth you want and finish them in brass or whatever you want. Keep double clicking on anything that looks clickable and you will be surprised what is hidden underneath. I don't recall a brass as such but you can set a paint colour that is close to what you want, double click the colour swatch and, (down the bottom) make it shiny.  At the bottom of this same panel tick Display Setting Details. This gives you 4 sliders to change the shininess, brightness, transparency and colour bleed (haven't played with the last one yet).

If you play with a colour/texture with these controls it is best to add a copy of the colour/texture because the changes will occur anwhere you use this material.  For example, if you set some fabric to semi-transparent for a lampshade and have the same fabric on curtains or chairs, then they will become semi transparent too - not a good look!!  These effects can be applied to any material, so you can make walls transparent for example but it is only one way. To make it transparent from the opposite side you must change that too.

1. If you want even greater control of using a material such as ceramic tile in a wall....simply use a rectangular shape, as thick as the tile (perhaps 1/4" thick) and use your material of choice, then size and position (can use collision on or off as needed) against the wall and above the floor.   Its less "automatic" but easily controlled

2. I made a "brass" material by duplicating the gold material (in finishes) and changed a few characteristics such as reflection and it works well.  If I can export the material I'll post it here later as its on my desktop in my office.

Thanks, guys!

Here's a screenshot of the bathroom I'm working on.  I created the glass shower walls for my catalog and put just plain baseboards on them for the moment.  I'll work on the lustre later.

Next is my attempt to put ceramic on the walls.

Lest you think I'm nuts, the angle of the wall at the far side of the shower is half a pentagon (ie, ~54*).  One of these days, when I complete the creation - or at least get it farther along - you'll see that it's one of two baths that back up to each other and have both tubs and separate showers.

Onward and upward!

Some more suggestions now that I can see what you are doing. You could use the Box (See "Useful Shapes..." in Tips section of Forum) or Rectangle (Rugs) to apply your Tiles to your shower and even use the box to make the raised section across the front.  Using a raised wall (I presume that is what you have done) cuts the hole in the floor - unless you put it on another location - hence the use of the box.

Also you could use the picture frame for the actual shower screens - reduce the Matting to almost zero and narrow frame for the edges.

The image was just a quickie using the above. Baseboard is set to tiles but the wall tiles need to be moved out in front of it slightlly but it gives you an idea how it could be done.

Great!  Thanks for including the .bld.  It helps a lot to see what is happening in the software with the options chosen.

Here are some "brass" materials and a setting I used that worked for me....play with materials/settings until you get results you desire (try size and orientation changes too). You can search the web for more brass.jpg files as there are many web sites with free material images (Google/images)

If you have FP11, I used the "sunset" picture as a shiny brass that worked well with just ray-trace renders....see next message for more samples (limit 4 per msg)

2 more....

the "ss gold" is similar to the sunset scene pic effect available in FP11

Thank you for sharing, Doug.

Those will work beautifully.

Title: Say, Alan! Where Did You Get the 54 mm Recessed Light Fixture?
Post by: ahr8tch on January 29, 2008, 11:55:45 PM
I'm guessing that it's something you created.

The one I'm asking about is the light fixture in the shower.bld file attached to your post, above.

That would be a very handy catalog entry.

It is just one of the standard Ceiling Fixtures. The lighting import has a bug and will crash the program. You can put one of the existing lights into an imported object to make it look like a light but depends how important the appearance is as to whether it is worth while.

You can also make an object look illuminated by increasing the Materials emissive setting.

Alan,

Hating to be such a needy pest, but that fixture does not appear in the ceiling lights list (Interiors/Interior_Lights/Ceiling_Lights) in my catalog.  I have 9 hanging ceiling light fixtures and one recessed lighting fixture - see attached pic - among the various other fan/light combinations.

Is there more digging I need to do in the catalog?  Is there some part of the catalog I'm missing?  Is this something I should contact IMSI about?  I didn't receive the 1000 house plans vaunted with TFP either and I got the CD package, not the download, which is why I wonder if my catalog is complete.  (Lot's of people have said of me that I'm 2 bricks shy of a load.  Wonder how they knew about my TFP catalog?  ;D)

I dont know why it is, but the shower that Allen build, the bld file, it loads and moving around in it in 3d is really really fluid. I walk through it with such control and ease.

BUT my current drawing I am working on, it jerks abit when I slide side to  side or use the feet to walk through.

What do I need to check to make sure mine is as smooth as Allens shower.bld?

I think jerky motion (assuming h/w acceleration setting is same for each .bld file comparison) is usually caused by heavy computations such as a file that is large or has an inserted .3ds object or has a complex or large texture map .jpg file and the computer just can't quite calculate and display as fast as the user is changing the view

so I'd suggest you compare the 2 .bld files for size and materials complexity and be sure the "test" conditions are the same....like maybe your PC was doing something else too when the jerky motion was detected.  Do a ctrl+alt+del and watch CPU usage performance for each test case.

Apparently I did not reply to your query about the Recessed light.    The blue bulb that you have as the Recessed light is because you have apparently clicked the Bulb option on the Lights Basic tab and then closed it. I have previously found if you do that it stays that way and the fitting is lost. I lost my original recessed light the same way although I had previously created another so I still had the copy.   I can't remember now if I reported that as a bug - might have to do so again just in case. If you open my BLD file of the shower you should be able to restore it to your catalog from there.

On the other point, as Doug said, it would undoubtedly be file size, as the bathroom is only small.  If you have Hardware Acceleration off because of other issues, you may be able to have it on for moving around. I only find it is a problem when rendering. It seems everyone's PC reacts differently with HA!
