Title: Radiosity
Post by: dkb194 on February 24, 2008, 08:51:16 AM
I have tried a number of times to get radiosity to work. I always turn off my hardware accelleration. I left it on last night and this morning checked and the screen showed the program was not responding and I was only at 70/218 with 30,000 seconds. I was at low settings as well. Raytrace takes 5 min but I've never had a radiosity work.

Does it not even work for a simple 4 walls, floor, ceiling and window? (must have a window to let light inside)

I had a simlar problem on my desktop, Laptop was fine. Desktop problem was solved when a failed 512 RAM was replaced. At 512 it did not do radiosity at 1 gig it did. (Laptop is 2 gig).  I suspect it is not so much the RAM but how the OpenGL is using the memory. Whatever the cause the extra RAM solved it.

If your PC is more than 512 then I have no idea why it is not working.

you could post your .bld file to see if any of us can render it...to determine if its your PC or the file...could be either.

As Allan suggests...can you render a most simple file (tools wizard house build) and does with or without sun "on" or "off" matter?  And try inside vs. exterior renders before you post any file

Machine is Desktop PC with 2Gig on Board, Dual Core Intel 4200, 7950 Graphics card with 512 on board. I reinstalled last night as I am still having problems with saving revised settings on the desktop to no avail. When I tried to render I now get an error message box. Contents at home. Will Add. Before the reinstall I was able to get one radiosity to work by going directly to advanced vs doing a ray first. Now I'm dead. I'll post the bld file later but it is now 5 meg.

are your using Vista OS?  see recent thread on render problems with Vista .....with unkwown if Vista is the problem or not

5MB is OK but first try a small basic file....something in the 5MB could be the problem....5MB is either a complex drawing or something added such as a large .3ds object

Thanks Doug. Will try small scale. I'm on Windows XP Pro SP2. Correction on processor - AMD 64x2 4600+ at 2.4GHz. I have a few downloaded 3ds objects in the plan.

Simple Building Radiosity and Raytrace Rendering Work. The main file has 170373 polygons and takes 22 seconds to read. When I try to Radio i get error message
Render: Illegal Polygon
File: Obj_5861_1_0.ent
Line: End_Surf
Line Number 118500

Must be bad object

yes sounds like a bad 3ds import object

you can eliminate one at a time to find the problem object

then go back and see the object.....it may be able to be fixed in original program or re-saved or converted from file type and back or by using a different conversion program

or you can post the problem 3ds file here and see if others have same problem or can easily fix for you
