Title: Calculate Estimate/Project Estimate
Post by: digerati on March 17, 2008, 10:15:56 AM
I used TFP to deisng my house as it currently is, then design the addition that we want to do to it as it ties into the home.

We are adding a New Larger master bed and bath.

I am still working on it, but I just realized something.

How can I seperate out the cost of the addition project from the rest of the house cost?

You will have to put everything involved in the extension on a separate location.

The estimate is itemised by location.

Sorry to be a pain or sound lazy, but can you tell me a little bit more on how to do this, or tell me where to go in the help file to look.

look in help for "location"

I am not having any luck yet.

I went to locations and added the Master Bedroom and Batch and when I select it, it shows nothing.

How I did this was I selected all the parts that were to be the bed and bath, then went to Building Locations and added and it immediatly deselected what I chose.

I dont know how to add a location and add the componets I want in that location.

You have to add the location then in to your original, select what you want to move, right click and select Duplicate to Location. Dont forget them to go back and delete the things on the original or you will have them twice - like the floor issue.

FIRST Of all, THANKS for all your help!!!

I follow you a little bit, but what am I doing wrong here?

I attached my 3 differant locations.

The master bed and bath addition to the house, I selected it all, then duplicated it to the master bed/bath location.
It appears to not be sitting on a slab and some of my walls do not appear correctly in 3d, they are showing a veneer side?

Anyways. Im a bit confused. I thought I could built this house from the ground up like a real house. Lay a slab, and build the walls and such and lay tile on the slab, thats what happens in real life after all.

What am I doing wrong?

Will I not be able to look at all locations at once, or will I have to click on each one independantly?

Unfortunately this is not reality - it is virtual reality!! Yes for a real house you would lay a slab and stick tiles to it but if you want to get it to calculate the materials then you will have to do things slightly different.  Tiles in the program are just a texture and all textures are just a microscopically thin surface that spreads over the 'wire' framework that are the edges of each item. (Try switching to wireframe view!) So a slab is just a box to which you can apply a colour/texture on each side.  The programmers have determined that if you choose a slab floor, then they will put in the estimates how much concrete this size would require.  If you change the concrete texture on the slab to tiles (or timber, grass or anything else) it will not change what the programmer determined what a slab is made of.

If you have different floor surfaces (who doesn't?) then you need to add the floors to each room so you can change the surface to suit what you want but still have a concrete slab in the material estimates. If you have a full slab in the whole building and then add a tile or timber floor into a room, you will have two floors in the same area and competing textures on the surface, as in one of your other questions. (There is a request in asking for a warning that you are duplicating floors if you add another etc.) You can overcome the competing textures by elevating (right click) the tile floor by a fraction but that will not fix the materials list.

Re duplictating the locations. It will only duplicate what you select.  If you did not select the floor it will not duplicate it so they would have to be added to the bedroom location by room (slab floor but change the texture to carpet/tiles etc).  In plan view you can only look at and work on one location at a time (the others should grey out) but they will come together in 3D.

Because you are segregating the new rooms from the rest of the house to get the estimates for it, there are a few complications. The main one is that the rooms on each location must be a complete rooms (not just 3 sides) otherwise the program will not change the outside walls to an exterior texture (if will appear as interior). This means you need to add the fourth wall (where it joins the existing part of the house) as an "invisible wall" using the 'Room Divider' icon (floor with a red line through it).  This will complete the room and the outside will become an 'exterior' wall. If you want the doors etc in the joining wall to appear in the estimates for the addition ,then you will have to make the invisible wall in the old part of the house and add the doors in the new part, although this will add the wall into the materials also.

I hope you can follow all of that and it makes some sense!

You have been a HUGE help.

I am going to read and re read what you have written and see what I can get done.

Thanks!!!!

In default mode as-installed TFP, this is true:
"In plan view you can only look at and work on one location at a time (the others should grey out) but they will come together in 3D."

But you can change the settings if you wish to overcome this....
menu/settings/program settings/workspace/location dimming percentage....normally set at 9x%, change it to 0% and you will see all location "layers" in 2D floorplan at same time

This may help you visualize it better in 2D....but likely you will want to change the % back to a much higher number to distinguish locations from each other as you work in 2D.

This setting is "global" which means its set in the program and not per design file....so the setting "sticks" and will be the same for all .bld files unless you change the program setting.

Hope it works out for you - ask again if you get stuck.

By the way (I asume you do not know about this option), you can use File / Export / 2D image and select JPG to produce images that are ideal for sharing on the forum.  This will produce a small memory file and you can choose the image size too.  It is probably easier to do, than using screen prints. 640x480 is probably ideal for use on the forum or even smaller for many things (use the Custom size option). Obviously larger is OK if great detail is required but these generally mean scrolling side to side to see the whole thing which can be a pain (especially on my phone!!).  It produces an image without all the surrounding toolbars etc so it is ideal for the purpose.

Rendering the image as a JPG does not work unfortunately - that has to be saved as a BMP but these can easily be resaved as a JPG using software already on most PCs (Paint or MS Imaging etc) if necessary to post on the forum.  That bug has been reported but the JPG Export option does work.

All the best with your project,

Allan
