What I want to ultimately do is import a dxf into a TFP model and be able to make it invisible to both the eye and to snaps.

I am not quite clear what you are using the DXF for, but if you are only using it to trace from or position things, then when you import, it put it on a Location by itself (create a new one called DXF say) and when you import it make sure you have that location open. The DXF will go onto that location and then when you select your Ground Floor it will still be there but greyed out and be un-selectable. (you can set the Location Dimming level on Settings/Program Settings / Workspace) You can also use the View Filter (Eye icon) to turn it off completely when necessary and obviously you can delete it when you are finished with it.
I use this method all the time for tracing from DXF files.

I recently read something similar in the Envisioneer (parent s/w to TFP) forum
And Env has ability to import dxf as a CAD input (2D/3D??) and inserted objects such as walls can snap" to the dxf
But TFP12 does not have that menu capability...but of course Env costs a lot more $$$.
