Title: V14 problems
Post by: securejohn on April 04, 2009, 08:12:59 AM
I finally got around to loading V14 but I'm not that impressed.
Just wondering if anyone else has had the same problems that I'm getting.  I spent the best part of two hours going and getting all the latest drivers for my hardware and DirectX to make sure my PC is up to date. I also downloaded and installed the v14 patch. Current version read:14.0.c1.637 Build Date; Wednesday, March 25, 2009.

1.   Program will not run with Hardware accelerator off. As soon as I turn it off the PC crashes. This is almost revease to normal.
2.   I opened and converted the v12 plans without any problem. But as soon as I started to work with them the mouse and keyboard froze. Had to press reset button.
3.   When I go into view manager and select an new view - PC crashes (Not all the time but 2 out of 3)
4.   I can't get the workspace - when I go View-View Manager all I see is Default group Default view. The Active box is tick in default view.  I have used the view menu and added a model view but this just gives me another tab window with the same view as the previous tab window view. I have tried starting a new drawing and in view manager I get Default group and a single Standard view with the active box ticked.

So far from v12 to v14 I currently can't see any different apart from Icons that are more like window3 graphics. V12 I found almost bullet proof and I never suffered program crashes like I have had this morning with v14. If fact I don't think I have ever had any program crash as much as  TFPv14.

If I could get the Workspace to function then I might persist at v14 but I think anyone who is jumping straight into v14 would be very disappointed if they have a fraction of the issues that I'm getting.

Hi John,

Sorry to hear about the problems you are having - I have no problems with my desktop at all but had a few issues with View Manager and Print button on my laptop, although this appears to be a PC/Printer issue, as some other programs on the laptop also have the same issues with printing and it will not print at all at present from any program. Can't add or delete a printer at present. There an not printers there to delete, but when you try to install one it says they are already installed! It is in for 'repairs' at the moment.

Your HA issue is different! With V12 I did have some things I could not do with HA on.  With V14 I have it on all the time on both PCs with no problems at all (and the drivers are several years old!).

There was an earlier issue raised about View Manager being affected by the patch and by changing the default template back to the original one, it was solved, so hopefully this may work for you.  (http://forum.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,809.0.html (http://forum.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,809.0.html))/

Many of the changes to V14 are not glaringly obvious, other than the toolbars (which AREglaringly obvious!). Maybe they help those who eyesight is failing.  One new feature I find I am using constantly, is the right click 'Select All Similar'.  It means you can easily select all walls for example with one click and edit them all at once. Saves huge amounts of time for me. There is now a 'Find and Replace' text on the Layout toolbar which is useful, as are the single click Footings tool, wall Detailing tool and sloping Surfaces tool.

Hope some of the above helps,

Allan

Allan,

The view menu that I have doesn't give me the option to add a worksheet. I have looked at the images that you and other have posted I just don't get those. I'm sure that you posted an image of a worksheet with boarders, and text boxes in the right hand lower part of the screen/sheet http://forum.turbofloorplan.com/index.php/topic,800.msg3872.html#msg3872. I can only get a new model. When I click new model I get a complete plan of the drawing added to the new sheet/Tab which is normally a downward view of the roof. I have tried every possible setting in the setting menu and nothing will give me the worksheet. Changing the setting is no easy task when the program keeps crashing the PC and that without the issue of the damage to the HDD it's likely to cause. The v14 program is very unstable.

I have un-installed and reinstalled clearing out the reg but still the same. Its like I've got a different program to everyone else. (It is the pro that I have downloaded and I've applied the patch to it as well). Also I noticed on the reload that it asks to set the measuring unit of choice. Which in my case is metric, but the program just reverts to imperial every time its started. I tried to use the search in the help and it doesn't seem to work either.

When I create a new model (new view) I have noticed that the scroll bars do not function. Zoom works but I can't scroll around the window. In the View Manager under the View Properties tab these a Type box. This box is greyed out with the type Model View displayed.
I assume this is where the type of view is selected?

I'm so close with my design that I only really want v14 so that I can produce the working plans and then make any changes I need for planning. So I would put up with the crashing problem just to get that function.

I started this today around 7am this morning and now nearing 4pm some 9 hours I've concluded that I would have been better off using that time to learn CAD.

John,

Did you try the suggestion of setting it to pick up the original metric template that came with V14 BEFORE the patch? The worksheet dissappearace seems to be linked to this file and the using the original template file seems to fix it.

Also have you seen my personal message - it should have shown up in your email but can be accessed through My Messages at the top of the forum. Read that and get back to me if you have any problem. I have attached my metric template. If you set that as your default template (Settings/Program Settings/General), it should fix the metric problem and hopefully the worksheets too.

Allan,

After several hours of unstable use of V14, I've concluded it's too unstable to be useable. I can't see any real benefit in keeping it on my PC.  V12 is bullet proof can't remember it ever crashing. My project design is very near completed and once I get planning in place, I can't see me having a real need for TFP (although never say never)

Of course the big problem with not upgrading is when you need to ask for help with a particular element. If working with a version that is not current or the version that the experts like yourself are not using, it could be a counter productive move.

As far as the worksheets, I have spent a few hours this morning playing with a couple of CAD programs and have managed to directly import my TFP12 plans into TurboCAD and QCad. QCad is a GNU(GPL) 2D CAD software package for most LINUX systems (there is also a windows and Mac version but not GNU) I have found it very easy to learn and probably would be the easier option if all someone needs to do is make a set of working drawing. It took me about 2 hours to import the plans, make some changes to the section drawing and add the drainage details.

Hi John,

Sorry V14 is not working out for you.  Looks like there is something, somewhere, causing V14 and your PC not to like each other. I am not a techo with PCs so I have no suggestions in that regard.

As far as getting any help in the future for V12, that should not be a problem.  I still have V12 running (and V11, 10 and 8) so it should not be a problem to help. All versions are complete - they do not replace each other, so it is still possible to help.

It is a shame the Workseets have not work out as it is so quick. I have just created a model of a church, and produced detailed plans, sections, elevations, framing, electrical and landscaping all in a couple of hours. I cannot believe how quick it is possible to do it.

Hope your planning application goes OK.

Allan
