Title: Not enough space to install V14
Post by: philaddison on May 19, 2009, 11:23:01 AM
I just purchased and downloaded TURBOFloorPlan3D Home & Landscape PRO V14, but it is complaining there is "not enough space on disk" to install it. It does not state how much it needs so I don't know by how much to change my partition size to accommodate it. I am actually installing it a partition with 14GB free, which should be ample!! So I suspect it is the C: drive that it is complaining about, as this only has 480MB free.

Any ideas how much is needed on the C drive.

Thanks
Phil

PS: If TURBOFloorPlan3D designers are reading this, I suggest you improve your error report to at least say how much extra space is needed AND ON WHICH DRIVE.

Hi Phil,

The download is over 500 MB so I suspect you C drive would certainly be a problem.

From the past experience of others, I would strongly recommend installing everything in the default folders if at all possible.

Thanks again Allan, I'm starting to regret parting with cash already! I started out with FP3 years ago, and coming back to it now had hoped the problems would have been cleared up by now. I'll put a few more gigs on C: and let the defaults run.

Hi Phil,

I have used FP almost daily since V3, on numerous PCs and cant recall any consequential issues. I never play around with my PC as I dont know anything about them technically (never heard of a 'swap file' for example), so I have simply let each version over the years just install itself and it has always worked perfectly every time.

You will find, when you get it installed successfully, that TFP has advanced tremendously since FP days and in my opinion is ridiculously cheap for the technical capabilities it has. I certainly have never regretted one cent I have spent on it. It has paid for itself thousands of times over.

Hi Allan, That's very encouraging, but I'm having lots of problems with it, but I suspect it may be due to my old graphics card. Its crashed the program 3 times and the PC once. I'm going to look for a new card! I will also try running it on another machine. I installed the Turbofloorplan3D V14 patch build 637 (TFPPRO_14_0_C1_637.exe) perhaps I shouldn't have done that.

Apart from the crashes, I have managed to draw most of my floorplan (just a 2D floor plan), and am now fairly impressed with TFP, but I am stuck with one problem I can't resolve - I can't get the dimensions to show up. I can see individual dimensions ok as I draw a wall, but once the wall is complete the dimensions vanish. I have dimensions and text turned on in the filters and the print setup. I wonder if this is also a graphics card problem.

Hi Phil,

Build 637 is the one you want - that patch fixed a number of issues with editing V12 files. For crashes, maybe until you get another graphics card, turn off Hardware Acceleration in Settings/ Program Settings/ Graphics. It can cause all sorts of issues on some PCs.

If you have drawn a 2D floor plan then you have actually drawn a 3D one - just switch the view to 3D. You cant do one without the other.

Dynamic dimensions occur as you draw and reappear if you select a wall. For dimensions to stay, you have to turn on Automatic Dimensions in the Tools menu. These are not dynamic but refresh every time you click that option. Once you have activated them in that project you can turn them on and off in the View Filter if they get in the way. Dont forget to refresh them before you print if you intend to print the plan. Interior dimensions can be added individually from the same menu where and when you want, as can plain text and text with an arrow pointer.

Thanks again Allan. I have installed TFP, with the patch, on a different computer and am getting to grips with it fine now. It crashed just once so far, this morning, with an "Envisioneer 5.0 has stopped working" message, thats the same error I had on the other computer (XP), this one is Vista.

A couple of things I havent managed to figure out:

1) I have drawn a basic house, just the walls of 1 storey using the 2D input view, and when I switch to 2D it appears zoomed out as very distant house in the middle of a large green field. I guess this is the 'terrain'? can you tell me how to change the size of the terrain so that it is just slightly bigger than the house? Hopefully that will avoid me having to re-zoom in every time I go to 3D. Looking at the 'help' maybe I should have set the terrain size first.

2) The house I am drawing has a "lanai" (a patio enclosed in fine mesh to keep out insects). This lanai has its long side sloping upwards so the top is about 2 feet further out than the bottom. I tried to do makethis 'wall' with the surfaces tool, but couldn't make it work. Any hints please? also is there any way to produce a semi-transparent surface to simulate the insect mesh?

1) Go to the program settings, click in Terrain change length and width slightly bigger than you building but you have to do that before you add your drawing. An other way to do it is to turn of your terrain. that will you do in View Filter - Terrain un seletc the marking.

2) If you have Sketch Up 7 you can do a screen with a mesh then import it to TFP as a object and save it to your catalog.

Have you trubble with this you are welcom back so will we help you.

Hi Phil,

Just another suggestion for your insect screen wall. In the Interiors/Decorative you will find a Decorative Member. You can just make this very thin and use a mesh type Fabric for the texture.  When you set it, double click the image of the Fabric texture and down the bottof of the dialog box is an option (in the dropdown) to get the texture to partly transparent. Tick the box alongside it and you can use the sliders to change the transparency to get just what you want.  Using this Decorative Member you can also change the angle to get the slope you want.

You could also get the slope using a roof on another location with the wall height set very tiny. This would mean the roof would sit at ground level. Draw a Roof By Picking Points, set 3 side to gable and the degrees of slope on the 4th side to 80 degree (to get the slope of your screen).  This will make the roof slope very steeply one way. In 3D it will look VERY high (which was probably what you experienced with Surfaces tool). Go back to 2D, select the high end of the roof drag it close to the the low end.  This has the effect of reducing the height of the roof (or Surfaces). You will have to experiment back and forth with it, to get the height correct. Obviously set the roof thickness to very small and apply the 'transparent' texture.

You can resize the Terrain as Robert has explained but I always have my terrain very big, much bigger than the building or even the site, so that it goes off into the distance and you dont get the feeling of 'falling off the edge'. Dispite that, when I switch to 2D rendered it is always the same size as the 2D plan and if I switch to 3D it will always be the same view as it was the previous time I was in 3D. If the camera was up real close, then it would be up real close the next time. Does this not happen for you?  or do you keep using 'Zoom to Fit' which will zoom out to the edge of the terrain (unless you turn it off of course).

If those suggestions are any use but too vague, just ask again.

There are several "zoom" tools; each one helps to zoom better in its own way, try them all

'Zoom to extents' zooms out to show all....if it goes well beyond the terrain, you may have a stray object out there.

3D camera position should stay where you last left it when you go from 2D to 3D....and you can save multiple views/cameras....see "view manager" and 'insert new camera'.

Ask again if you still have questions.
