Title: Create Cabinet Run & ADA countertop
Post by: dhdesign on May 29, 2009, 10:00:37 AM
TFP, V12.  (but upgrading to V14 today)

Stymied designer here: I've searched & searched & tugged & pulled...how do I create a run of cabinets?

I need to fill a wall-to-wall vanity area approximately 80"W.  36"W cabinet goes in fine. 2nd 36" snaps into place fine. The remaining gap will not fill simply by adjusting the 2nd cabinet. (Trial & error dimension adjustment makes it finicky and it pops out of place.)  Disabling collision also causes the 2 cabinets to remain separate, without seamless countertop. I remember old Flooplan had a run-of-cabinet ability but TFP has me baffled.

2nd question:

Attempting to create ADA compliant RR vanity, I used "custom member" (within "accessories") to create slab countertop 72"Wx24"Dx3"H. --typical for public spaces.  Sink will not insert into it.  How can I work around?

Unlike FP3D, TFP does not have a 'run' of cabinets as such, but if you have auto insert turned on, they should just pop in one after the other totally aligned. Adjusting the width to take up the final space should be easy using the ruler (Tools menu) to get the measurement (zoom in close and watch the precise measurement in the Commander bar - turn it on in Settings if it is not there). All you have to do then is set the cabinet to the length and move it if necessary with the Collision off. You can get extremely precise movement using the keyboard arrow keys, if you set the Nudge distance in Settings / Program Settings/ Drawing Aids, to a very small figure.  I have mine set to 1mm all the time.  Click on the cabinet and move it in any direction simply by tapping the appropriate arrow key.  Zoom in close and you can get a perfect alignment, or move one 'inside the other' slightly if you want to get a specific look. (See the first image - the cabinets on the right have been moved into each other to appear like one. The counter level tops actaully stuck out on the sides, holding them apart otherwise).

Basins, sinks etc will only insert into cabinets that are big enough and into counter tops.  You can select any cabinet and turn it into a counter top by just changing the cabinet 'Type' on the Basic tab to Counter (scroll it to the extreme right).  It will fall to the floor but all you have to do is set the height on the Behaviour tab and then size it to fit the space. If it is free standing you can round or champher the ends too as in the other images.

Cabinets work differently to FP3D but are much more flexible really.
