Title: building a house that sits at a angle on a property
Post by: awninstall on June 26, 2009, 03:58:24 AM
I was wondering if anyone has an idea on the best method to build a house that will sits on a plot of land at a angle but still be able to use the Othro to set up internal walls.

I first tried to just build the outside walls of the house at 90 on the page and then slected everything i built- outside walls roof etc, but when I went to build the interor walls which I had basic measurements I was not able to use the othro as the house was no longer 90 degrees to the workspace.

I then just move it back to 90 and built all the walls to 90 degree angles but then had trouble selecting everything and fitting it to the exact terrain/landscape. In this example one corner is 40 feet from the street and another was 30 feet.

Whats the best way to do this.  Build the house and then build the terrain and landscape angled to that , or build the landscape and then try to shift everything to the angle,  or is it better to calculate the angle adn use angle snap.   I am wondering if I then will have problems on getting the house to proper east west north south direction.

Whats your thoughts?

Hi William,

I don't think I would even consider doing it at anything except as square to the screen.  It is dead easy to make the site bountary (or your fence line) at an angle as that is only 4 lines (if it is rectangular) and then just position the north point accordingly in the Rendering settings. The terrain is always rectangular but that is irrelvent really - just a flat plain as a base. It will make it very hard if you do not do that - even furnishings are normally oriented to square to the screen and printed plans are also done the same way with just an arrow indicating north.  You ceertainly cannot use Ortho if you angle the house itself - just angle the site boundary instead.

It should be possible to rotate to an angle afterwards if you wanted to but I can't think of any logical reason to do so. The trick is to turn off the option to "Select elements on current location only in plan view" (Settings/Program Settings/Building Aids), then go to plan view and Edit/Select All. Make sure Collision is turned off also.

Thanks.

That seem like a good stable datum.  do the terrain afterward.

Thanks.

I did a rendering with the radiosity and it gave two error codes about locations.  This is the first time I went to that level as I built one design and now going to be sending the options so did the step one in radiosity.  It stopped and then gave a error message butch of  numbers.

I am sure its because somthing is not sitting correctly either height or on the locations but don't know how ti make heads or tails of the codes. the help menu does not even cover the step just covers it in an overview.  Maybe the pdf but di not look at that yet.

Is there somewhere where the codes are defined or some way to see what might be placed wrong?
I found in turbo cad proper placement levels just make it inop for some functions things.

I know as I learn more I will know the right way to build it so don't run into problems.

Hi William,

I would have to see the error codes to have any idea what they are about. Personally I have not seen any codes such as you describe. Have you tried a new project, simply drawing 4 walls and a roof and see if it renders OK.  If it does then go back to your proper project and turn off the locations one by one in the View Filter and render. If you repeat this you will presumably find the location that is causing the errors.

Generally they are caused by a corrupt wall - usually a bad join.  Each wall has a green, blue, red indicator when you click on them. Green is the end you started with and Red where you finished that wall, with the blue a centre marker for draging the wall.  If you have a red/green marker in the between two adjoining walls, you have break in it.  Also zoom in on all the wall joins and make sure you do not have any odd bits of wall at the intersection it should be just a clean join.

If you can't find anything and still get the error, post the BLD file here and I, or others, can have a look and hopefully find the problem for you. (... or you can email it direct if you prefer).
