Title: Edit terrain details after inserted?
Post by: George Smith on June 26, 2009, 04:10:23 PM
Does anyone know how (or if it's even possible) to modify & edit terrain items after they are drawn?
For example, lets say someone inserts lots of plateaus and slopes in order to accurately draw a site.  After they are all drawn, how can one move/modify/edit any of those plateaus/hills/valleys/etc?  It is as if once drawn, they are permanently part of the landscape and can't be selected individually.  This makes it extremely difficult to draw a terrain, because it is as if one would have to plan out the entire yard step by step before drawing it, and make no mistakes.  If you want to tweak or adjust it, tough luck?

Everything on or part of the terrain is adjustable after it is inserted; like any other item such as a wall, door, roof, etc.  Or can be deleted.

One tricky part of terrains tho is they are additive for height so you must know what depends on what else is there, or adjustment results may not react as anticipated...just read the help info about each type as you use it and play around and it will become more clear.  Suggest you do a few trial/test/play .bld files before you try anything for serious on a file you deem important.

see help file or search this forum for helpful hints for terrains.

Once terrain is setup and work done...just select tools and objects and adjust.

If you have a specific problem, best to show example .jpg pics and provide .bld file here for others to look, try, explain what to do.

Hi George,

The problem with editing the terrian is finding the actual to edge to select it. Using the Plateau tool for example it will draw some contour lines but often the line that is the top edge, where you originally drew it, is not visible and you need to click on the plan alongside the contour lines to find it.  You can then drag the the solid blue box marker to move that edge or the open blue box to move that point. Right click for Properties to change the height /gradient.

As Doug pointed out though the tricky part is realising that each plateau/hill etc you draw, adds to the previous ones - this allows for varying degrees of slope. A 1 metre high plateau will be 1 metre above the terrrain. Add another 1 metre plateau and the part that overlaps the top of the first will be two metres high.

If the slope goes beyond the end of your terrain (ie the whole block slopes) then start drawing the plateau OFF the edge of the terrain and finish off the edge, returning to the start point completely off the terrain.

Doug's advise to practice on a new project is the way to go - you will soon catch on to how it works.
