The exterior rendering comes out fine in day or night time settings - as soon as I add any lights to the interior the render becomes excessively bright. I changed the bulb to a small wattage, I dimmed the picture to the max of -16 w/o effect. Removing the lights makes the interior dim (as it should be under my conditions). Any advise would be appreciated. Is there a service pack that addresses the issue?

We will need a few more details to identify the problem:
Which version are you using? (Quote the full Verson Number as found under Help/About... eg: Version 14.0.C1.637)
Are you using Basic or Advanced Render?
Can you post an example of the rendering settings you are using?
In the image below are the typical settings I would use for Advanced render- you may like to try those.
If you can see inside and outside in the same image then it may be best with the sun set to Overcast.
If you still have problems with these settings post a copy of your BLD file - this is the easiest way to diagnose a problem.
